The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers performed a titanic task: creating the breakwater took nearly two decades and between 700,000 and 760,000 tons of local granite. This massive project cost over $880,000 but provided a safe haven for ships in the harbor, protecting them from fierce Atlantic storms.

The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse itself was completed in October 1902 by the W. H. Glover Company. From that moment on, it began emitting regular white flashes every five seconds. In 1998, this historic structure was officially transferred to the city of Rockland, maintaining its status as one of the region's primary maritime relics.
