History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the mid-19th century. It all began in 1856 when Jacob Weisbrod founded the first brewery. A few years later, production moved to the foot of the legendary Sugar Loaf rock. In 1870, Peter Bub, a Bavarian immigrant whose experience in Milwaukee helped take local brewing to a new level, joined the company.

After the founder's death, Peter Bub took over the business and, overcoming the consequences of a devastating fire in 1872, turned it into the thriving Sugar Loaf Brewery. At its peak, the brewery produced over 22,000 barrels a year, supplying not only Minnesota but also neighboring Wisconsin. It was one of the few businesses to survive the Prohibition era by switching to soft drink production.

The family business continued until 1969, when stiff competition from industrial giants forced the owners to close production. However, in 1992, the historic building constructed in 1897 found a new life. The former Druids Hall was transformed into the modern Bub's Brewing Co bar, preserving the legendary brewer's name and the spirit of old Winona for future generations.
