Current Weather

Planning a trip to sunny Benguela? In this section, you'll find the latest information on current weather conditions and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly plan your holiday in Angola.

Overview

The climate in Benguela is of a tropical trade-wind type, which is significantly tempered by the cold Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean. This makes the weather in this part of Angola surprisingly stable and mild year-round, sparing travelers from the extreme heat typical of the African interior.

Two main seasons are clearly defined throughout the year: the dry season (May to September) and the wet season (October to April). The dry period is characterized by a near-total absence of precipitation, clear skies, and pleasant ocean breezes. The wet season brings a slight increase in cloud cover and humidity, though rain along the coast remains quite rare, allowing for a comfortable stay in the city at any time.

Thanks to the oceanic influence, Benguela is famous for its comfortable conditions for beach holidays and sightseeing. The ocean trade winds not only soften the heat but also frequently bring morning mists that add a touch of freshness and make the local landscape particularly atmospheric.

Temperature

Temperatures in Benguela are remarkably consistent: throughout the year, the thermometer usually fluctuates between 16°C and 28°C. The hottest period is considered to be from February to April, when daytime temperatures reach 29–30°C. Nevertheless, the proximity to the Atlantic in Angola tempers the heat, and sea breezes make these temperatures quite comfortable.

The winter months (June, July, and August) bring a slight decrease in temperature. During the day, the air warms up to 22–26°C, while at night it can cool down to 18–19°C. Daily temperature fluctuations are minor, usually around 5–8°C, which helps avoid sudden temperature spikes.

The ocean water temperature deserves special mention. The most suitable period for long swims is from December to February, when the water warms up to a pleasant 25–27°C. In the winter months (July–August), the water temperature drops to 20°C, which might feel refreshing but still remains acceptable for swimming.

Precipitation

Rainfall in Benguela occurs in very moderate amounts—the annual level is about 230–300 mm. Most of the rain falls between October and April, reaching its peak in February and March. However, even during these months, the rains are short-lived and localized, rarely disrupting tourists' plans for long.

From May to September, a distinct dry season sets in Angola. During this time, the probability of precipitation in Benguela is virtually zero, ensuring consistently dry and clear weather. Humidity levels decrease during this period, making outdoor activities as pleasant as possible.

Snow is completely non-existent in the region, and all precipitation falls exclusively as rain. Due to this arid climate, the region maintains its status as a sunny resort for most of the year, which sets it apart from the more humid tropical zones of Central Africa.

Packing Tips

When traveling to Benguela, it is best to wear clothes made from natural, "breathable" materials such as cotton or linen. It is always warm during the day in this part of Angola, so shorts, light dresses, and open sandals will be the staples of your wardrobe. Be sure to bring high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and quality sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong tropical sun.

Despite the generally warm climate, it is worth bringing items for the evening and boat trips. Due to the influence of the ocean, it can feel cool after sunset, so a light windbreaker or a thin sweater will come in handy. If your trip falls during the wet season (October–April), pack a compact umbrella or a light raincoat in case of brief downpours.

For practical items, we recommend packing insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and comfortable closed shoes if you plan on excursions over rugged terrain. For relaxing on the Atlantic coast, don't forget your swimwear and a beach towel.
