Getting There: Introduction

When planning a journey to southern Africa, many tourists wonder how to get to Gaborone — the dynamic capital of Botswana, located right on the border with South Africa. This modern city, serving as a significant economic and political hub, offers guests developed infrastructure and serves as an excellent starting point for a safari.

You can reach the city in various ways: by taking an international flight, embarking on a road trip along the region's high-quality roads, or choosing a combined route through neighbouring cities.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the capital is to fly into Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE). This modern aviation hub is located just a few kilometres from the city centre and receives regular flights, ensuring a reliable connection with the outside world.

If direct tickets are unavailable, travellers often choose to fly to nearby cities in neighbouring South Africa followed by a transfer. Convenient alternatives can be the airports in the city of Mahikeng (136 km) or at the famous resort complex of Sun City (142 km), from where you can continue your journey by land.

By Bus

Bus travel is a popular and budget-friendly option for exploring the region, especially from the neighbouring Republic of South Africa. Although a single centralised schedule database may not be available, regular services by major carriers connect the capital of Botswana with border cities.

Routes typically pass through major border posts, and travel time depends on the speed of customs clearance. Travellers are advised to check the current schedule and departure points directly at the bus stations of neighbouring major cities before their trip.

By Car

Travelling by car allows you to enjoy African landscapes and provides freedom of movement. One of the shortest and most convenient routes leads from the city of Mahikeng: the distance is only about 149 km, which will take approximately 2.2 hours to drive. Also popular is the scenic route from the Sun City resort, from where you can reach the capital of Botswana in 3.1 hours (about 200 km).

If you are departing from the major metropolis of Pretoria, prepare for a journey of 362 km. The travel time will be approximately 4.3 hours, with the road offering good surfacing and interesting views. Do not forget to account for time at border control when planning your trip.

Travel Tips

Gaborone is a friendly and modern city, but like any capital, it has its own characteristics that are useful to know in advance. To ensure your trip is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have prepared a list of important practical recommendations.

  1. Seasonal clothing. The climate here is semi-arid and hot. Bring light clothing made of natural fabrics (cotton, linen), and definitely a head covering and sunglasses. However, evenings, especially in winter (from May to August), can be cool, so a light jacket or sweater is necessary.
  2. Transport nuances. Public transport is represented by minibuses (combis), which are cheap but can be crowded. For tourists, the most convenient and safe option is booking an official taxi or renting a car.
  3. Currency and payment. The official currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Major shopping centres, hotels, and restaurants accept international bank cards without issues, but it is better to always carry cash for markets and small shops.
  4. Language barrier. English is an official language, and the vast majority of the population speaks it, especially in the service sector. Knowing a couple of phrases in the local Setswana language (for example, a greeting) will be received with great respect.
  5. Safety and health. Tap water in the city is considered treated, but tourists are recommended to drink bottled water to eliminate risks. Gaborone is a safe city, however, one should avoid walking alone in unlit areas at night.
  6. Local etiquette. People in Botswana are very polite. It is customary to greet people, even strangers, before asking a question. A handshake is an important part of greeting; it is often done with two hands as a sign of respect.

Observing these simple rules will help you adapt faster and receive only positive emotions from getting to know the culture and rhythm of life in Botswana's capital.
