Catedral Santo Antônio

About

In the heart of the city of Chapecó stands the monumental Saint Anthony Cathedral — the main spiritual center of the region and a striking architectural landmark of the state of Santa Catarina. Consecrated in 1956, this cathedral is a majestic building easily recognized by its two symmetrical 40-meter towers reaching toward the sky.

One of the unique features of the cathedral is its architectural plan: from a bird's eye view, it is clearly visible that the building is constructed in the shape of a Latin cross. This makes it not just a place for prayer, but an outstanding example of ecclesiastical architecture in Brazil.

The picturesque stone grotto located behind the cathedral attracts particular attention from pilgrims and tourists. Images of Our Lady are installed there, creating an atmosphere of solitude and peace. The cathedral serves as the seat of the local diocese and remains a vital site for all those seeking spiritual inspiration or interested in the history of the region's development.

What to Do

A visit to the cathedral offers guests a combination of aesthetic pleasure and spiritual tranquility. Inside the temple, you can appreciate the majestic interiors and architectural designs that were meticulously restored during the 2006 renovation. Be sure to notice how light enters through the windows, emphasizing the scale of the interior space.

For believers and pilgrims, an important ritual is visiting the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony of Padua and praying in the special grotto. This quiet spot behind the main cathedral building is filled with a special energy. Here you can see images of Our Lady of Aparecida and Our Lady of Grace, where local residents leave their petitions and gratitude daily.

For photography enthusiasts, the cathedral provides many excellent angles. Thanks to its high towers and strict cross-shaped geometry, the building looks striking in photos at any time of day. Additionally, solemn masses and important religious holidays frequently take place here, allowing tourists to get closer to the living Catholic traditions of the region.

Getting There

Finding the city's main sanctuary is easy, as the Saint Anthony Cathedral is located on Marechal Floriano Peixoto Street in the historical and administrative center. Thanks to its location, the temple is within walking distance for those already strolling through the central districts.

If you are traveling from outlying areas or the airport, it is most convenient to use taxis or public transport. City buses run regularly through the center, and a car trip to the cathedral will be quick and comfortable. Travelers arriving at Chapecó International Airport can book a transfer or rent a car to reach the main square in a matter of minutes.

History & Facts

The history of Saint Anthony's parish began on June 13, 1931. Bishop Daniel Hostin chose this date intentionally to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the saint's death. In those early days, the first ministers were Franciscan monks who traveled vast distances across the region on horseback and donkeys.

The first church building was made of wood, but its fate was tragic: on the night of October 5, 1950, a devastating fire almost completely destroyed the structure, leaving only the bell tower untouched. However, this sad event united the community, and by 1951, the foundation for a new stone temple was laid under the guidance of monk João Vianney Erdrich. Construction was completed by 1956, becoming a symbol of the resilience of the city's residents.

The church received cathedral status in 1959, when the Diocese of Chapecó was officially established. Since then, the building has been carefully preserved: for its 50th anniversary in 2006, a full restoration was carried out, returning the cathedral to its former grandeur and solemn appearance.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the cathedral's architectural ensemble and soak in its atmosphere, 1–2 hours is usually sufficient. This is enough time to study the interior decor, admire the stained glass windows, and visit the cozy stone grotto located behind the main building.

If you plan to attend a festive mass or spend time in quiet prayer, it is worth adding an extra hour or two to your schedule. The cathedral is often visited by photographers wanting to capture the play of light on the facade of the forty-meter towers, so the best time for a visit is in the morning or during the pre-sunset hours.

Working Hours

The cathedral is open to visitors on weekdays and Saturdays, though there is a scheduled break. Standard working hours are from 09:00 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 17:30 on weekdays, while on Saturdays, the temple receives visitors only in the first half of the day — from 08:00 to 11:30.

On Sundays, the cathedral is usually closed for tourist sightseeing, as the main worship services take place during this time. Before your trip, it is recommended to check the official website or clarify the mass schedule so that your visit does not coincide with closed events or important diocesan ceremonies.
