The complex consists of six historical hangars whose architecture has preserved the spirit of the industrial past: brick facades with arched windows, elements of an old shipyard, and original artifacts. It is not just a shopping center, but a multifunctional space inspired by the famous Chelsea Market in New York. There is an atmosphere of comfort and discovery here, and every corner is steeped in the history of the Hoepcke family, who founded this district.

Visitors can expect not only exquisite restaurants and bars but also concept stores for decor, ethnic-inspired clothing, and farmers' markets. Armazém Rita Maria has become an important cultural landmark, uniting gastronomy, shopping, and respect for the heritage of the old pier whose name it proudly bears.

What to Do

A visit to this place is a true feast for the senses. Foodies should embark on a gastronomic journey: from exquisite Argentine steaks at Vacuno and Italian pasta at Olivia Cucina to Japanese delicacies at Noir Sushi. Don't forget to stop by the Lulu Marché market for unique products or enjoy the famous Freddo ice cream.

Fans of aesthetics and shopping will enjoy the Casas com Alma decor boutiques and ethnic clothing stores. While walking between the buildings, be sure to notice the historical details: under glass floor sections, you can see the rails once used by minecarts, and nearby are huge mooring bollards and even a two-ton rudder from an ancient steamship.

If you're looking for unusual experiences, head up to the business tower terrace, which offers a panoramic view of the Hercílio Luz Bridge, or visit Franz Cabaret for vibrant burlesque shows. It is an ideal spot for both a business lunch and a romantic evening surrounded by live music and the lights of the old city.

Getting There

Finding this center of cultural and gastronomic life is easy, as it is located in the very heart of Florianópolis. Its address is Alameda Annita Hoepcke da Silva, 112, which is situated almost directly opposite the central bus station (Rodoviária) and within walking distance of the famous Hercílio Luz Bridge.

If you plan to arrive by public transport, choose any bus heading to Rodoviária. For those arriving from the airport or distant beach areas, it is most convenient to use taxi services or Uber apps—the trip from Hercílio Luz Airport will take about 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

For those who prefer walking, the site is perfectly integrated into the pedestrian routes of the city center. It is worth noting that parking in this area can be limited, so using a taxi or approaching on foot will save you the trouble of finding a parking spot.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1896, when the German entrepreneur Carl Hoepcke, who became a true industrial pioneer of the state of Santa Catarina, founded a warehouse complex here. The first four "galpões" (hangars) were built for the needs of his shipping company, the Hoepcke National Navigation Company, whose ships connected the south of the country with the world.

In the early 20th century, it was a bustling industrial hub: factories producing ice and nails operated here, and ships with orchestras on board arrived at the Rita Maria pier. However, technical progress took its toll, and in 1981, the complex was closed due to outdated equipment. For a long time, it remained abandoned, waiting for its moment.

The project found its second wind thanks to the dream of Annita Hoepcke da Silva, the founder's granddaughter, who sought to turn the family legacy into a gift for the city. After a large-scale restoration completed in January 2022, Armazém Rita Maria appeared before the residents in a new form, preserving authentic details of the past, such as a massive two-ton ship's wheel and original shipyard mechanisms.

Time Needed

To leisurely admire the architecture of the complex, browse a few boutiques, and have a cup of coffee, 1–2 hours will be sufficient. If your goal is a full lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants, you should set aside about 3–4 hours for the visit.

For those who want to get the most out of the experience, an evening visit is an excellent choice. Dedicate an entire Sunday or a weekday evening to combine gastronomic discoveries with a cabaret show or relaxing in the open-air beer garden. The atmosphere of the place changes throughout the day, becoming especially cozy after sunset.
