Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Novo Hamburgo is classified as humid subtropical, ensuring a clear distinction between seasons. There is no extreme cold here, but the weather can be changeable. Travellers should expect fairly high humidity and regular rainfall throughout the year, making the region's nature lush and green.

Summer, which lasts from December to March in the Southern Hemisphere, is hot and humid here. Daytime temperatures often reach 29°C, and January is considered one of the rainiest months: precipitation can occur up to 17 days a month. Winter (from June to August), on the contrary, is mild and cooler. During this time, the air warms up to an average of 15–19°C during the day, while nights can be fresh, with temperatures around 10°C.

The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, are characterized by the most comfortable conditions with moderate warmth of around 20°C. Although August is considered the "driest" month, rain in this region is a common occurrence all year round. Therefore, when planning a trip to the country of Brazil, it is recommended to always carry an umbrella or raincoat, regardless of the date of your visit.

Temperature

The climate of the city of Novo Hamburgo is distinguished by a moderate character with clearly defined seasons, typical for the southern regions of the country. The hottest time of the year is the local summer, lasting from December to March. The temperature peak occurs in January, when the air warms up to an average of 29.2°C during the day. This time of year can be quite warm, but the nights bring welcome freshness: the temperature drops to a comfortable 18-20°C, allowing you to rest from the daytime heat.

The winter period, covering the months from June to August, is characterized by mild and cool weather. July usually becomes the coldest month, when the average temperature is about 14.6°C. At this time, night readings can drop to 10.0°C, so warm clothes will definitely be required for evening walks. Nevertheless, during the day, even in winter, the air often warms up to a pleasant 19-20°C, making this season quite comfortable for excursions and exploring the city without exhausting heat.

An important feature of the temperature regime in Novo Hamburgo is the noticeable daily fluctuations. Throughout the year, the difference between the daily maximum and the night minimum averages about 10 degrees. For example, in April or October, after a warm day when the temperature reaches 24°C, it becomes noticeably cooler by night — around 14-15°C. Travellers should consider this factor and bring layered clothing to feel cosy at any time of the day.

Precipitation

The weather in Novo Hamburgo is characterized by fairly frequent rainfall throughout the year. It is difficult to distinguish a clear dry season or rainy season here, as moisture is distributed relatively evenly across the calendar. Travellers should be prepared for variable cloudiness and precipitation regardless of the chosen travel date.

The "wettest" period can be considered summer and early autumn. The peak frequency of precipitation occurs in January, when an average of 17 rainy days are recorded. In March and October, the situation is similar: the sky is often overcast with clouds, and it rains for about half the month, reminding one of the humid climate characteristic of this region of Brazil.

Relative calm arrives in the winter months. The driest time of the year is August, when the number of days with precipitation decreases to 9, and their volume is minimal (about 3 mm). July also offers slightly more stable conditions for walks with 10 rainy days, making winter a good time to visit if you are not bothered by lower temperatures.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Novo Hamburgo, it is worth considering the seasonality of the local climate. If your journey falls during the summer period (from December to March), when the daytime temperature often reaches +29°C, the basis of your wardrobe should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses will be very useful, and be sure to bring sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the active sun.

For a visit in the winter months (June, July, August), warmer clothes will be required, as the average temperature drops to +14...+15°C, and at night it can get cold down to +10°C. At this time of year in Brazil, the principle of layering is relevant: take jeans, jumpers, thick hoodies, and a light jacket or windbreaker with you. This will allow you to feel comfortable both in the cool morning and during the warmer day.

Particular attention should be paid to protection from moisture, as rainy days happen here regularly throughout the year (from 9 to 17 days a month). A compact umbrella or a high-quality raincoat are mandatory items in your luggage. It is also recommended to take comfortable, preferably waterproof footwear for walking, so that the changeable weather does not interfere with exploring the city.
