Built in the 1830s on the site of a former British military post, Dundurn Castle was the home of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, a prominent political figure who served as the Premier of the United Province of Canada. Today, it is a meticulously restored museum where you can explore more than 40 rooms furnished with authentic period pieces and household items. Guided tours bring history to life, telling the stories of the MacNab family, their servants, and the social life of the time.
Beyond the mansion itself, the castle grounds feature a two-acre historic kitchen garden, where vegetables, fruits, and herbs used in the 19th-century kitchen are grown. Produce from the garden is still used to prepare dishes from old recipes, which can sometimes be sampled during special events. A visit to Dundurn Castle is not just a tour of an old building, but a true immersion into the past, providing a better understanding of the history and culture of Canada.
