How to get to Tame

Tame is a picturesque city in the Arauca department, located at the foot of the Eastern Cordillera in Colombia, often referred to as the "Cradle of Freedom" due to its historical significance. Before travelling to Tame, it is worth noting that this region is renowned for its endless Llanos plains and an authentic atmosphere, far removed from the bustle of megacities. The fastest and most convenient way to reach Tame is by air. The city is served by Gabriel Vargas Santos Airport, located just a few minutes' drive from the central area.

The primary carrier on this route is the airline Satena, which operates regular flights from Bogota. The flight takes about an hour, saving significant time compared to overland travel. The route network sometimes includes flights from the administrative center of Arauca or neighbouring Saravena, although schedules depend on the season and days of the week.

If tickets for direct flights are unavailable, one might consider flying to the city of Yopal, which receives more flights from various regions of the country. The remaining part of the journey from Yopal to the final destination would need to be covered by bus or taxi, offering a chance to enjoy views of the Llanos plains.

It is not possible to reach Tame by train, as railway infrastructure is completely absent in the city and its surroundings. Passenger rail transport in Colombia is very poorly developed and practically does not extend to this Llanos region.

The route from the administrative center of Arauca is longer — about 190 km, taking an average of 3–4 hours.

Routes from the city of Yopal, the capital of the neighbouring Casanare department, are also popular. The road, about 180 km long, takes approximately 4–5 hours and passes through picturesque plains, allowing one to enjoy views of the wildlife. Buses on these routes run regularly, making ground transport a reliable and budget-friendly alternative to flights.

Travelling by car to Tame allows you to experience the true spirit of the Colombian plains, turning the road into a distinct adventure. The fastest route is from Saravena: covering 60 kilometres on an asphalt road will take just over an hour. If you are departing from the administrative center of Arauca, the journey of about 190 kilometres will require approximately 3–4 hours, during which you will enjoy views of the endless savannah.

A scenic road also leads from Yopal, located 180 kilometres to the south; travel time is usually about four hours. For those who do not plan to drive, intercity taxi services are available; it is recommended to agree on the price with the driver in advance, as fixed rates are often absent here.
