How to get to Goma

For those travelling from the south, a scenic route from Kamembe is available. The journey along Lake Kivu may take 6–7 hours, but it is compensated by breathtaking views of the water and green hills. Please note that most intercity buses take passengers to the border points of neighbouring countries, after which you must cross the border on foot to enter Goma directly.

A trip by car offers the opportunity to see the stunning landscapes of the Great Rift Valley on the way to your destination. The most popular and high-quality route runs from the capital of Rwanda, Kigali: the distance of 162 km can be comfortably covered in about 3.5 hours. Lovers of scenic views should consider the road from Kamembe, which stretches for 210 km; this journey will take about 4.5–5 hours but will provide a wealth of impressions from the beauty of the local nature.

Entry from the Uganda side via Kisoro is also convenient: the road of about 102 km will take just over 3 hours. For transfers, travellers often book an official taxi or rent a car with a driver, which will cost on average 100–150 US dollars depending on the route and vehicle type. Please keep in mind that the travel time is indicated without accounting for border crossing procedures, where queues may occur.
