Overview

Nicoya's climate can be described as hot and tropical, with very stable temperatures throughout the year. It is almost never cold here: the average air temperature fluctuates within a comfortable range of 26°C to 29°C, and daytime heat during the hottest months, such as March and April, can reach 34°C. This is an ideal destination for those seeking eternal summer and warmth.

The main feature of the local weather is the clear distinction between the dry and wet seasons. From December to April, there is almost no rainfall, which guarantees cloudless days for beach holidays and excursions. In contrast, the rainy season lasts from May to November, peaking in September and October, when there can be up to 30 rainy days per month. Travelers should consider this contrast when planning their trip: the dry season is ideal for sunbathing, while the wet period brings freshness and allows you to see tropical nature in all its glory.

Temperature

Nicoya features a hot tropical climate where air temperatures remain consistently high throughout the year. The hottest period here does not fall in the middle of the calendar year, but in the spring months: March and April show the highest figures. During this time, the average temperature reaches 29.2°C, and daytime maximums often rise to 34.2°C, creating an atmosphere of dry tropical heat.

During the typical summer months of the Northern Hemisphere (June–August), the heat subsides slightly, giving way to milder but more humid weather with average temperatures around 26.6°C. The "coolest" months of the year are October and November, when daytime air warming is limited to 29°C, and average values drop to 25.9°C. However, even during this period, the concept of "winter" is quite relative, as the weather remains summer-warm.

The region is characterized by noticeable daily temperature fluctuations that bring relief after a hot day. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum averages about 10 degrees. At night, the air usually cools to a comfortable 22-24°C, providing pleasant freshness and favorable conditions for sleep at any time of year.

Precipitation

The climate in Nicoya is characterized by a clear division into a dry season and a rainy season, which is typical for this region of Costa Rica. The driest and sunniest period lasts from December to April. In January, February, and March, the probability of precipitation is near zero (average rainfall of 0 mm), and the number of rainy days is minimal—only 1–3 days per month. This is the perfect time for those looking for guaranteed clear weather.

The rainy season, often called the "green season," begins in May and continues until November. During this time, nature blooms, but humidity increases significantly. The rainiest months are June, September, and October, when up to 29–30 days of precipitation are recorded monthly. During this period, it rains almost daily, often in the form of heavy but warm tropical downpours.

Transition periods occur in April and November. In April, the number of wet days begins to gradually increase (about 12 days), and in November, the rains subside (about 20 days), giving way to the dry season. Since Nicoya is located in the tropics, precipitation here occurs exclusively in the form of rain, and there is no snowfall.

Packing Tips

Since it is warm in Nicoya year-round with an average temperature of about 26–29°C, the basis of your wardrobe should consist of lightweight items made from natural, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses will be most comfortable on hot days, especially in March and April, when the mercury often rises to 34°C. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high protection factor, as the sun is very active in this region.

When packing, it is important to consider the seasonality of rainfall. If you are planning a trip between May and November, be prepared for high humidity and frequent rain (up to 30 rainy days in October). During this time, a lightweight raincoat or a compact poncho will be indispensable—much more practical than an umbrella—along with quick-drying shoes. In the dry season, from January to March, rainfall is almost non-existent, so you can stick to standard summer clothing and open sandals.

Regardless of the time of year, comfortable sneakers with non-slip soles are recommended for long walks and exploring the surroundings. Also, don't forget to pack swimwear and insect repellent, which will come in handy in the evenings. Although the nights here are quite warm (temperatures rarely drop below 22°C), a light long-sleeved shirt can be useful for protection against mosquitoes or an occasional breeze.
