General Weather Overview

Nosara welcomes travellers with a hot tropical climate, which is ideal for a beach holiday almost all year round. The temperature regime here is remarkably stable: average air indicators confidently stay in the range of 26–28 °C, whilst nights remain warm and comfortable. The proximity of the ocean softens the heat, making time spent on the coast pleasant even during the sunniest hours.

The weather in the region has a distinct seasonality, divided into a dry period and a rainy season. From January to March, precipitation is virtually absent, guaranteeing clear skies and maximum sunshine — this is the most popular time for tourists. Starting in April, humidity gradually increases, and from May to October the rainy season sets in, reaching its peak in the autumn months when showers can occur almost every day.

However, even the wet season has its own charm: nature becomes incredibly lush and green, and the rains often have a short-lived tropical character. Thanks to consistently high temperatures, the ocean water remains warm all year round, so you can plan a trip to this part of Costa Rica based on your preferences: for a flawless tan in winter or for the riot of tropical greenery in summer and autumn.

Temperature

The climate in Nosara is distinguished by enviable consistency and tropical warmth throughout the year. The concept of cold is practically non-existent here: the average annual temperature stays within a comfortable range. The hottest months are traditionally February and March, when the daytime air warms up to an average of +31.5°C — +31.8°C. This time, coinciding with the dry season, is ideal for those who love real heat and bright sunshine.

Even during the period that can be conditionally called "cooler" (mainly October, when the most precipitation falls), the weather remains summer-warm. During these months, average daily highs drop slightly to +27.6°C due to cloud cover, but the sensation of warmth remains. The concept of "winter" is irrelevant for this region of Costa Rica: even on the freshest nights of December or January, the temperature extremely rarely drops below +23.6°C.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Nosara are smooth but noticeable, adding comfort to your holiday. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is usually about 6–7 degrees. This is enough for a pleasant evening freshness to set in after the midday heat, allowing you to enjoy dinner outdoors without exhausting humidity.

Precipitation

The climate in Nosara is characterised by a clear division into dry and wet seasons, which is typical for the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The driest period lasts from January to March. At this time, precipitation is practically absent: in January and February, about 0 mm of precipitation is recorded, and the number of rainy days is minimal (from 1 to 4 per month). This is the ideal time for those looking for guaranteed sunny weather for a beach holiday.

From May, the situation changes, and the region enters the so-called "green season". The number of wet days increases sharply, reaching its peak between August and October. During these months, it rains almost daily (up to 30–31 days a month). October is considered the wettest month of the year, with the highest amount of precipitation falling (about 15 mm according to statistics), so travellers will definitely need umbrellas and raincoats at this time.

The nature of the precipitation is predominantly warm tropical rains. Transitional periods fall in April and November. For example, in April, despite the small amount of fallen moisture (3 mm), there are already about 16 rainy days, which indicates the beginning of the season change. By December, the rains begin to retreat (9 wet days), preparing nature for a new dry cycle.

What to Pack

Since warm tropical weather reigns in Nosara all year round with average temperatures of about +26...+28°C, the basis of your wardrobe should be light items made of natural "breathable" fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to take enough T-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses, as well as swimwear for a beach holiday. Given the high activity of the sun in this region of Costa Rica, a hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high protection factor (SPF 50+) are an absolute necessity in any season.

When packing, it is important to consider the seasonality of precipitation. If your trip is planned for the period from January to March, dry weather awaits you, and you can get by with a standard summer set. However, from May to November, the rainy season sets in, when precipitation falls very frequently. For a trip at this time, be sure to put a light raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker, or a high-quality umbrella in your suitcase. It is recommended to choose clothes that dry quickly, as the humidity of the air can be high.

As for footwear, comfortable sandals or flip-flops are perfect for the beach and walking around the town. If you plan to explore natural attractions and walk on trails, bring a pair of closed sneakers or light trekking boots with non-slip soles. Also, do not forget to take insect repellent with you, which will be useful for comfortable evening walks and excursions into nature.
