Overview

Playa Samara welcomes travelers with a classic tropical climate that is perfect for a beach holiday practically any time of year. The temperature remains remarkably stable, with averages comfortably holding between 26°C and 28°C, and daytime highs often rising above 30°C. Cold weather is non-existent here, so you likely won't need any warm clothing.

Throughout the year, the weather is clearly divided into two distinct seasons. The dry season lasts from January to March, characterized by abundant sunshine and a minimal chance of precipitation—it's the ideal time for sunbathing and swimming. During these months, rain is very rare, and the sky almost always remains clear.

From May to November, the "green" or wet season arrives on the coast. The number of rainy days increases significantly during this period, peaking in September and October. However, even then, the weather stays warm, and rain often falls in short bursts that refresh the air and make the surrounding vegetation incredibly lush and vibrant.

Temperature

The climate in Playa Samara is remarkably stable with tropical warmth year-round, making this resort an attractive destination in any season. There are almost no sudden changes: the average annual temperature gently fluctuates within a comfortable range of 25.7°C to 28.0°C. The hottest period is traditionally from February to April, when daytime temperatures often exceed 31°C, reaching their peak in March.

Interestingly, what is known as "winter" in the northern hemisphere (December, January, February) is the sunniest and driest time of year here. These months offer beautiful weather with an average temperature of around 27°C, perfect for a beach getaway. Conversely, the calendar summer (June–August) brings a slight dip in temperature to 26.2°C — 26.4°C. This is due to cloud cover and the rainy season; however, the air remains very warm and humid, creating a soft "steam room" effect.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Playa Samara are not too extreme but still bring a welcome freshness after the midday heat. The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows averages about 5–7 degrees. The nights are exceptionally comfortable: temperatures drop to 23.6°C — 24.9°C, allowing for pleasant evening strolls in light clothing. Even in October, the "coolest" month of the year, daytime heat rarely falls below 27.6°C.

Precipitation

Playa Samara experiences a clear division of the year into dry and rainy seasons, typical of the Costa Rican climate. The driest and sunniest period occurs at the beginning of the year: January, February, and March. During this time, precipitation is minimal, with February being the driest month, averaging 0 mm of rainfall and only one rainy day. This is the perfect time for those who want to enjoy cloudless skies and beach relaxation.

The situation begins to change in April, when the number of rainy days increases to 17, although the total volume of precipitation remains low. The true rainy season takes hold in May and lasts until November. During this period, rain becomes a frequent companion for travelers: from June to October, 29 to 31 rainy days are recorded per month, meaning it rains almost every day.

October is considered the wettest month, seeing the highest amount of rainfall (around 15 mm) with rain falling daily. However, by December, the intensity of precipitation drops significantly to 2 mm, and the number of rainy days falls to 10, marking the transition back to the comfortable dry season.

Packing Tips

Since Playa Samara is located in a tropical climate where temperatures remain at a comfortable 26–28°C year-round, your luggage should primarily consist of light summer clothes. Choose garments made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, and don't forget to pack a few swimsuits. During the dry season, which lasts from January to April, the sun is especially strong, so a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+) will be your best friends.

If your trip is scheduled between May and November, be prepared for frequent rainfall. During this time of year, especially in October, it rains almost every day, so be sure to pack a lightweight but reliable raincoat or a waterproof poncho. An umbrella might be less convenient due to potential ocean winds. It's also recommended to choose clothes made from quick-drying materials, as high humidity can make things take longer to dry than usual.

Comfortable sandals or flip-flops are perfect for the beach and exploring the area, while closed-toe but lightweight shoes with non-slip soles are better for nature excursions inland. Although temperatures rarely drop below 23°C even at night, a light long-sleeved shirt can be useful for protection against insects in the evening or air conditioning on public transport. Also, don't forget to bring repellent, which is necessary regardless of the season.
