The history of this majestic structure dates back to the mid-19th century. It all began in 1855, shortly after the founding of the city of Nueva San Salvador. The construction was initiated by Colonel León de Jesús Castillo, who dedicated his life and resources to creating a temple in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The original architectural ensemble included the Concepción Church, to which new elements, such as a bell tower with three bells, were gradually added.

In 1871, Colonel Castillo decided to erect an even more grand building. The first stone of the current Iglesia del Carmen was laid in 1878 by Bishop Luis Cárcamo y Rodríguez. Interestingly, the construction was largely funded by voluntary donations from citizens and lottery proceeds. The founder himself, León Castillo, passed away in 1891 without seeing the project completed; his remains rest inside the church beneath one of the windows of the left aisle.

After the colonel's death, the work was led by prominent priests. A special contribution was made by Father José María López-Peña, who modified the design of the central nave, giving it distinct Gothic features. The construction lasted a total of 37 years and was only fully completed in 1913. The building's facade was adorned with an impressive bronze image of the Virgin Mary, cast in 1910.

Today, the parish is under the care of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Over the decades, the church has not only served as a spiritual center but has also remained an important witness to the development of El Salvador, carefully preserving its artistic and historical heritage.

On Saturday, there is a reduced schedule: a visit can only be planned for the first half of the day, from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Please note that on Sunday, the parish is closed for regular tourist sightseeing, as this day is entirely dedicated to the needs of the community and solemn worship services.
