Getting There: Introduction

The picturesque city of Arba Minch, located in southern Ethiopia, is renowned for its magnificent lakes and proximity to national parks, attracting nature enthusiasts from all over the world. If you have decided to travel to Arba Minch to explore this amazing region, it is important to plan your route in advance. There are several convenient options for reaching the city: travellers can take a domestic flight or embark on a journey by bus or car.

By Plane

The most convenient and fastest way to get to Arba Minch is by air. The city is served by its own airport, Arba Minch Airport (AMH), which accepts regular domestic flights. The airport is located very close to residential areas, ensuring quick and easy access to key locations immediately after landing.

In the absence of tickets for direct flights, travellers sometimes choose to fly to neighbouring Jinka or the major regional centre of Hawassa. It is worth considering that these airports are more than 100 kilometres away, so such a route will require planning additional time for road travel.

Traveller Tips

A trip to Arba Minch will give you unforgettable impressions from encountering the nature and culture of southern Ethiopia. To ensure your journey is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have prepared a list of useful recommendations that will help you better navigate local realities.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate here is warm, but due to the proximity of mountains and lakes, the weather can change. Prefer light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics that covers your shoulders and knees — this aligns with local standards of modesty and protects you from the sun. Be sure to bring comfortable trekking shoes for walks in the national park and a head covering.
  2. Transport. To move around the city, it is most convenient to use "Bajajs" — three-wheeled auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks). This is a fast and cheap way to get to any point. You should agree on the cost of the trip with the driver beforehand, before you get into the vehicle, as there are no meters here.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Ethiopian Birr. Bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted only in major hotels, so it is extremely important to carry a sufficient supply of cash. You can exchange Dollars or Euros at banks, but it is better to take care of this in major cities or at the airport upon arrival.
  4. Health and Safety. Due to the proximity of water bodies, there is a risk of malaria in the region, so be sure to use repellents and sleep under mosquito nets. Drink exclusively bottled water and avoid drinks with ice in street cafes to prevent stomach upsets.
  5. Communication. The official language is Amharic, however, in tourist spots, hotels, and among guides, many speak English. Locals greatly appreciate it when tourists know a couple of words of greeting in their native language, for example, "Selam" (Hello/Peace).
  6. Local Etiquette. Ethiopians are a very polite and hospitable people. Greetings are often accompanied by a handshake and a light touching of shoulders. Remember an important rule: eating, passing money, or handing over items should be done only with the right hand, as the left is considered "impure".
  7. What to Avoid. It is strictly not recommended to swim in Lakes Chamo and Abaya, even if the water seems calm and safe. These bodies of water are home to one of the largest populations of Nile crocodiles in Africa, as well as hippopotamuses, which can be aggressive.
  8. Extra Tip. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the local market, especially on market days. Here you can buy unique handmade textiles with traditional patterns of the Gamo Gofa region, which will make an excellent souvenir and memory of the trip.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid everyday inconveniences and fully focus on the beauty of the Great Rift Valley. Arba Minch is a welcoming city that will reveal its best side to the prepared traveller.
