In the heart of the resort town of Les Sables-d'Olonne, on the Atlantic coast of France, lies a surprising neighborhood — Île Penotte. Despite its name (which translates to "Penotte Island"), it is not an island in the traditional sense, but a labyrinth of narrow pedestrian streets transformed into a real open-air gallery. Its main feature is the facades of the houses, which are entirely decorated with whimsical mosaics made of seashells and pebbles.

Behind this magic is local artist Danièle Aubin-Arnaud, affectionately known as "The Shell Lady" (La Dame aux Coquillages). Since 1997, she has been creating entire paintings on the walls of houses with love and incredible imagination, using the shells of oysters, mussels, scallops, and other sea creatures. Each panel is a unique story inspired by mythology, fairytales, and maritime themes.
A walk through Île Penotte is an immersion into a fantasy world. Here you can wander for hours, looking at the details of the mosaics: from funny animals and mythical creatures to intricate ornaments and complex narrative compositions. This place enchants with its original atmosphere and is one of the most photographed and unusual attractions in the city, a must-visit for everyone looking for something unique and made with soul.
