Accro-mâts

About

If you've ever dreamed of feeling like a sailor on board a majestic sailing ship, then the Accro-mâts park is a place you simply cannot miss. Located in the historic city of Rochefort, this adventure site—unique in all of Europe—is a giant structure shaped like a three-masted ship, where masts up to 30 meters high are used instead of the usual trees.

This unusual project is located on the grounds of the famous maritime arsenal in France. Instead of classic rock climbing, it offers the chance to master 18th-century seafaring skills: visitors can climb rope ladders, walk across yards, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Charente River and the ancient docks.

Accro-mâts is seamlessly integrated into the atmosphere of the historic port. It is built on the site of an old dry dock where royal frigates were once constructed, making a visit to the park not just a physical challenge but a true immersion into maritime history.

What to Do

The main attraction at Accro-mâts is, of course, climbing the masts. Visitors are invited to test their agility across three levels of difficulty. The bravest can ascend to a height of 30 meters, walking along footropes and yards just like the sailors of the past. For those seeking an extra dose of adrenaline, there are exciting ziplines and the QuickJump attraction—a controlled free-fall jump.

For the youngest travelers aged 3 and up, a special zone called “Drôle de Quai” has been created. Here, little ones can safely overcome low-level obstacles, developing their coordination in a playful way. This makes the park an excellent destination for family vacations, where everyone can find an activity suited to their strength and courage level.

During the summer, night sessions are sometimes held, when the masts are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere over the river. Many tourists prefer to purchase combined tickets, which allow them to visit the legendary ship L'Hermione or the Corderie Royale museum, located just a few steps away, after their climbing adventure.

Getting There

Finding Accro-mâts is easy, as it is located in the heart of the historic Arsenal des Mers district, right on the banks of the Charente River. If you are already in the center of Rochefort, you can reach the park on foot in less than 10–15 minutes, using the ship masts and the Corderie Royale building as your landmarks.

For those arriving by car, there are parking areas available near the Arsenal. If you are traveling from neighboring cities like La Rochelle or Royan, it is most convenient to take a regional train to the Rochefort-Ville station. The journey takes 10 to 20 minutes, after which you can reach the attraction on foot or by taxi.

Buses also run through the city, and you can take one to the Rochefort Arsenal stop, located in the immediate vicinity of the adventure zone entrance. Navigator coordinates: 45.9354042, -0.957514.

History & Facts

The history of the site where Accro-mâts is located is inextricably linked to the maritime greatness that France embodies. The park is situated within the boundaries of a unique dry dock from the era of Louis XV. For centuries, the majestic ships of the Royal Navy were built and repaired right here.

The design of this unusual rope park was inspired by the legendary frigate L'Hermione. The structure perfectly replicates the proportions and rigging of an 18th-century three-masted warship. When you climb its ropes, you are literally retracing the steps of the "gabiers"—the sailors of that era who worked at immense heights on the open sea.

The creation of this site was an innovative way to preserve historical heritage, turning an industrial monument into a living space for adventure. It is the first project of its kind in the world, where a sports attraction is integrated into the authentic historical environment of a naval shipyard.

Time Needed

Completing the main courses at Accro-mâts usually takes about 1.5–2 hours. This time includes the climbing itself and moving between the masts. However, it’s worth setting aside an additional 30–60 minutes for the mandatory safety briefing, getting your gear, and potential queues during peak hours or holidays.

If you are planning a trip with young children who will be interested in the Drôle de Quai zone, your total stay may increase. It is recommended to plan your visit to combine active recreation with a tour of the neighboring museums, which together will take about half a day.

Working Hours

The operating schedule for Accro-mâts is highly seasonal, so we strongly recommend checking the park's official website for the latest information before your trip. Typically, the site actively welcomes guests during the warmer months, as well as on weekends and holidays.

According to preliminary information, the park is open on Saturdays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. During the summer months, there may be additional opening hours on weekdays, as well as special evening events as part of the Arsenal des Mers program.
