Long ago, when the city was surrounded by the Kala fortress wall, this site was a square in front of the Kojori Gate. It was called Caravanserai, or Hotel Square, reflecting its important role in the trading life of the medieval city. With Georgia becoming part of the Russian Empire in the 19th century, a new stage of development began: the territory was built up according to a regular plan, turning into an administrative center.

During the 19th century, the appearance of the square changed dramatically. By 1824, the headquarters of the Caucasian Corps already stood here, and between 1847–1851, the city's first opera house, combined with a caravanserai, was built according to the design of architect G. Scudieri. Unfortunately, the theater was destroyed by fire in 1874. Later, in 1880, after the Sololaki gorge was filled in, the square acquired its modern contours, becoming a single paved space.

During the Soviet period, the square changed its name several times: first, it was known as Beria Square, and from 1953 as Lenin Square, with a corresponding monument in the center. It received its current name, Liberty Square, in 1990, symbolizing a new era in the country's history.
