One of the park's main highlights is the Botanical Garden located on its grounds, which features rare plant species, as well as the historic Haus Schönwasser building. This former manor house now serves educational purposes but remains an architectural focal point of the entire ensemble.

History & Facts

The history of this area dates back to the early 18th century, when an old farmstead with the poetic name "Schoenwater" stood on the site of today's pathways. In 1830, the plot was purchased by tobacco manufacturer Johann Helgers, who built a luxurious country mansion here — Haus Schönwasser.

At the end of the 19th century, the estate changed hands, and restaurateur Johann Bende transformed the private property into a publicly accessible entertainment venue with a cozy café. This spot quickly became a favorite destination for city dwellers who appreciated the peace and aesthetics of the landscape design.

In 1910, the park officially came into city ownership. It was expanded and reconstructed during various periods, including as part of large-scale projects to combat unemployment in the early 20th century. After significant destruction and a period of decline, the park gained a "second wind" thanks to a renovation under the EUROEGA 2002plus project.

Today, Schönwasserpark carefully preserves the appearance of a classic 19th-century landscape park. Its status as a natural monument and landscape protection zone ensures that future generations will continue to enjoy its historical charm and natural richness.
