History & Facts

The roots of this famous educational institution date back to 1887, when the London Missionary Society founded the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese. This institution later became the foundation for the university's medical faculty, maintaining the continuity of knowledge and traditions.

The university was officially established in 1911 at the initiative of the then-Governor, Sir Frederick Lugard. The grand opening took place on March 11, 1912, and since then, the university has begun its journey as a leading educational center in the region. In those days, the main areas of study were medicine, engineering, and the arts.

Interestingly, the first graduation ceremony was held in 1916, and back then, only 23 students received diplomas. Today, the number of graduates is in the thousands, but the historical spirit still lives within the walls of the Main Building, serving as a reminder of the era when modern education was first established in Asia.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to the campus, it is worth setting aside 2 to 3 hours for a walk. This is enough time to leisurely explore the main architectural monuments, peek into the inner courtyards, and enjoy the atmosphere of academic tranquility.

If you plan to study the exhibits of the university museum in detail or decide to have lunch in one of the local cafes, the visit may take half a day. In any case, this place does not tolerate haste and encourages thoughtful contemplation.

Working Hours

The main administrative buildings and teaching areas of the university operate on a standard schedule: from Monday to Friday, generally from 08:00 to 18:30. While official offices may be closed on Saturday and Sunday, the campus grounds often remain accessible for walks.

As the opening hours of the museum, art gallery, and libraries may differ or change depending on the academic calendar, visitors are recommended to check the information in advance on the university's official website before planning a visit.
