History & Facts

Many fascinating legends are associated with this place. Locals often refer to the object as "Krishna's Butter Ball." According to legend, the massive boulder is nothing less than a piece of butter accidentally dropped by the god Krishna while descending the hillside. This story gives the rock a sacred aura in the eyes of pilgrims.

Historical attempts to move the giant are equally interesting. It is said that the first person who tried to disturb the rock's peace was the Pallava dynasty king Narasimhavarman, who ruled in the 7th century. Despite all the might of his army and laborers, the stone did not even budge, cementing its reputation as an unshakeable miracle.

In later times, at the beginning of the 20th century, the British Governor of Madras, Arthur Lawley, became seriously concerned about the safety of residents, fearing the boulder might roll down. He ordered the use of seven elephants to push the rock out of place. However, even the collective strength of these mighty animals proved useless against the laws of nature — the Balancing Rock remained where it was.

Visiting this location won't take much of your time, so it is easy to include in a busy sightseeing itinerary. Usually, 30–60 minutes is enough for tourists to fully appreciate the unusual geological form, take striking photos, and have a short rest.
