History & Facts

The history of this majestic body of water dates back to the 11th century. Upper Lake was created by the will of the legendary King Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty. To provide the prosperous region with water, the ruler ordered the construction of a massive dam that combined river tributaries into a vast reservoir.

A beautiful healing legend is associated with the lake's origin. It is said that King Bhoj suffered from an incurable illness. Sages predicted he would be cured if he created a body of water fed by 365 different springs and bathed in it. After the construction and the ritual were completed, the king truly recovered, and the lake became sacred to the local people.

Interestingly, the city's name itself originated from this engineering marvel. Originally, the settlement was called "Bhojpal": the first part in honor of the king, and the second ("pal") meaning a dam or embankment. Over time, the name transformed into the modern Bhopal, but the lake remains its "heart."

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the atmosphere of Upper Lake, we recommend planning a visit of 2 to 4 hours. This is plenty of time for a leisurely stroll along the promenade, a visit to one of the adjacent parks, and a short boat excursion.

If you plan to rent a boat or are a passionate birdwatcher, it is better to set aside more time. The best time to visit is during the pre-sunset hours, when the sun's rays paint the water's surface in golden tones, creating perfect conditions for photography.
