History & Facts

The history of this book giant began in a surprisingly humble way. The founder of the chain, Suresh Shah, started his first business on January 26, 1967, in Bangalore. At the time, it was a tiny rented space measuring just 10 by 10 feet. Few know that the first item ever sold in the history of the future empire was a small Lilliput pocket dictionary.

Suresh Shah himself had a challenging journey: before becoming a successful entrepreneur, he worked as a railway porter and for a book distribution company. Thanks to the support of his wife Bhanumati and his incredible hard work, his small venture grew into a major business within ten years, eventually becoming the largest bookstore chain in the state of Karnataka.

In 2008, the state government honored the company with the prestigious Karnataka Rajyostava Award for its outstanding contribution to Kannada language publishing. Today, the business is managed by the founder's sons and grandsons, who continue to develop not only the retail side but also a powerful online sales platform and support for aspiring authors through the SapnaINK project.

Time Needed

A 1-hour visit is sufficient for a quick browse through the inventory and to buy necessary stationery or popular new releases. The store is well-organized, making it easy to find the right department quickly.

However, for true book lovers, we recommend setting aside at least 2–3 hours. The vast selection of Kannada literature, educational guides, and rare editions invites thoughtful exploration of the shelves. If you plan to pick out gifts or souvenirs in the multimedia and sports sections, time will fly by.
