Overview

The city of Ratnagiri has a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by high temperatures throughout the year and a clear division into two main seasons: dry and wet. Thanks to its location on the Arabian Sea coast, there are no sharp temperature fluctuations, ensuring warm weather even during the "coolest" months.

The year in Ratnagiri can be divided into two periods. The dry season lasts from November to May, when there is practically no rainfall and the sky remains clear and sunny. This is considered the most comfortable time to visit. The heat peaks in April and May. From June to September, the monsoon season arrives, bringing heavy and frequent rains. July is particularly wet, with rainfall occurring almost every day. During this period, temperatures drop slightly, but humidity reaches its peak.

Temperature

Ratnagiri has a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures throughout the year. Temperature fluctuations between seasons are minimal, making the city a year-round destination for sun-seekers. The hottest months are April and May, when average temperatures reach 29-30°C and daytime highs regularly exceed 33°C. This pre-monsoon period is known for its hot and humid weather. The "coolest" month is January, but even then, the weather remains very warm with an average temperature of about 25.4°C and night-time lows around 21°C.

The winter season, from November to February, is considered the most comfortable for visiting. Days during this time are usually sunny and hot, with temperatures around 30-32°C, while nights bring a pleasant coolness as the thermometer drops to 21-23°C. This difference between day and night temperatures makes the evenings especially enjoyable. With the arrival of the monsoon from June through September, the temperatures drop slightly to 27-29°C, though high humidity and constant rainfall can make it feel muggy. During this period, daily temperature fluctuations are minimal, and nights remain as warm as the days.

Precipitation

The climate in Ratnagiri features a clear division into two main seasons: a long wet monsoon period and a dry season. The rainy season, brought by the monsoons, starts in May and reaches its peak from June to September. During this time of year, the weather changes dramatically, with frequent and intense downpours replacing the sun.

July is the absolute peak of the wet season — rainfall occurs almost every day this month. June, August, and September are also extremely rainy, averaging 28 to 30 wet days. By October, the intensity of the rain begins to subside, though this month remains quite damp. In contrast, the dry season lasts from December to April. The driest months are February and March, when there is almost no rainfall, creating ideal conditions for those who prefer clear and sunny weather.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Ratnagiri, it's important to consider its warm tropical climate, which dictates your wardrobe choices year-round. Your bag should be centered around lightweight and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Even in the coolest months (December to February), temperatures rarely drop below 20-22°C, so a light sweater or shawl for evening walks is sufficient. For the rest of the year, especially from March to May when it's hot, loose-fitting clothes in light colors will help you handle the heat. Don't forget essential sun protection: sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses.

A key factor in packing is the monsoon season, which lasts from approximately June to October. During this period, Ratnagiri receives a massive amount of rainfall, and it rains almost daily. If your trip falls during this time, be sure to bring a waterproof windbreaker or raincoat and a sturdy umbrella. Choose your footwear wisely: waterproof sandals or quick-drying models are best. It is better to avoid leather and suede. An insect repellent is also useful, as activity increases in humid weather, and bring a few extra sets of clothes, as high humidity makes things take much longer to dry.
