General Weather Overview
Chabahar, located in Iran, is characterised by a hot desert climate (according to the Köppen classification — BWh). The weather here is distinguished by high temperatures throughout the year and extremely low rainfall. If you are planning a trip, be prepared for a sunny and dry climate, regardless of the season.
Two main temperature periods can be distinguished in Chabahar. The "cooler" season lasts approximately from December to March, when average daytime temperatures range from 19.7°C to 24.7°C, while night-time temperatures drop to 14.8°C - 19.7°C. The hot season covers the period from April to November, with peak average temperatures in May-June of around 32.5°C - 33.4°C, and maximum values can reach 38°C and above. Even in the hottest months, nights remain warm, with temperatures rarely falling below 26°C - 28°C.
One of the most remarkable features of Chabahar's climate is its extreme dryness. Precipitation is minimal throughout the year, amounting to 0-1 mm per month. The number of days with precipitation is also extremely low, varying from 0 to 2 days per month. This means that rain here is a great rarity, and for the vast majority of the time, the sky remains clear and sunny.
Temperature
The climate in Chabahar is characterised by warm temperatures year-round, with a noticeable increase during the summer months. The hottest period is usually May and June, when the average temperature reaches 32.5°C and 33.4°C respectively, and maximum values can rise to 38.2°C in May. The coolest month is considered to be January with an average temperature of 19.7°C, with minimum night-time temperatures dropping on average to 14.8°C. December is also relatively cool, with an average of 21.7°C.
Summer in Chabahar, covering the period from May to September, is distinguished by consistently high temperatures. Monthly averages during this time range from 30.6°C to 33.4°C. The daytime heat can be quite intense, especially considering maximum temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. Winter, conversely, is very mild and comfortable. In January and December, the "coldest" months, average daytime temperatures stay around 24.5-26.8°C, and night-time temperatures rarely drop below 14-16°C, creating pleasant conditions for your stay.
Throughout the year, moderate temperature fluctuations between day and night are observed in Chabahar. The difference between average maximum and minimum temperatures is usually about 8-11°C. For example, in April the average maximum reaches 34.6°C, while the minimum is 23.7°C. In summer months, such as July and August, this difference smooths out somewhat, amounting to about 7.5-7.8°C. Overall, the city's temperature regime can be described as hot desert, but with milder winters compared to continental deserts.
Precipitation
Chabahar is characterised by an extremely arid climate, and precipitation here is a rare occurrence throughout the year. There is no distinct rainy season in the city; rather, one can speak of a practically year-round dry season with minimal rainfall.
The highest average monthly rainfall, if it can be called that, is only 1 mm, and this figure is recorded in February, March, and April. In the remaining months — January, as well as the period from May to December inclusive — the average rainfall is 0 mm. This indicates that significant rains are uncharacteristic for Chabahar, and dry weather prevails here most of the time.
Regarding the frequency of precipitation, even the number of days with it is small. The maximum number of "wet days" falls in January, February, and March — about 2 days in each of these months. It is important to note that even on these days, precipitation can be so insignificant (for example, in January and December with 0 mm of precipitation, 2 and 1 "wet days" are recorded respectively) that it does not lead to measurable moisture accumulation. The period from May to November is especially dry: in most of these months, "wet days" are absent entirely. Thus, travellers should expect predominantly sunny and dry weather when visiting Chabahar at any time of the year.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Chabahar, it is important to consider that the city is distinguished by a predominantly warm and sunny climate throughout the year. The basis of your wardrobe should be lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget reliable sun protection: high SPF sunscreen, quality sunglasses, and a head covering, preferably with a wide brim, will become your indispensable companions. For walking around the city and surroundings, choose comfortable footwear – light trainers or sandals.
In the hottest months, which usually fall between May and August when temperatures can rise above 35°C, give preference to the loosest and lightest-coloured clothing possible. In the cooler season, from December to February, daytime temperatures remain comfortable (around 20-25°C), however, evenings and early mornings can be fresher, with temperatures around 15°C. Therefore, a light jacket, cardigan, or jumper will be quite useful. Given that rainfall in Chabahar is minimal throughout the year, heavy rain gear or a large umbrella will most likely not be needed.
The principle of layering clothing can prove useful, especially during transitional seasons or if you plan to move between air-conditioned spaces and the hot streets. A light scarf or shawl can also be a multifunctional accessory – it will protect against the sun and add warmth on a cool evening. The main thing is that your clothes are comfortable and allow you to fully enjoy exploring this interesting corner of Iran.
