How to get to Shiraz

Getting There: Introduction

Located in the south of the country, the ancient city of Shiraz is rightfully considered the cultural heart of Iran and the homeland of great poets. When planning how to reach this magnificent destination, travelers can choose between a quick flight and a scenic overland journey through Fars Province. The developed transport infrastructure ensures a comfortable visit to the city, regardless of whether you are starting your journey from the capital or neighboring regions.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the city is to fly into Shiraz International Airport (SYZ). This modern aviation hub receives regular flights from Tehran and other major cities, ensuring convenient connections to the region.

Alternatively, you can consider flying to neighboring cities, such as Bushehr or Kangan. However, it is worth noting that these airports are located approximately 200 kilometers away, so after landing, an additional transfer by taxi or bus will be required.

By Bus

Intercity buses remain one of the most popular ways to travel around Iran thanks to their affordability and high level of service. Modern VIP-class buses with wide reclining seats (known as "takht-e sho") arrive daily in Shiraz from all major cities in the country.

Although the travel time can be significant, the comfort inside the cabin, air conditioning, and frequent stops make the journey non-tiring. Tickets can usually be purchased directly at the terminal before departure, but during holidays, it is better to arrange this in advance.

By Car

Traveling by car opens up the opportunity to independently explore the roads of southern Iran. A trip from the city of Bushehr will take about 4.5 hours, during which you will cover almost 300 kilometers.

Routes are also available from the cities of Kangan (about 340 km) and Lamerd (about 360 km); the travel time will be between 4.5 to 5 hours. For such trips, tourists often hire a private taxi, which allows for movement with maximum comfort and the ability to make stops at will.

Travel Tips

To ensure your stay in the city of Shiraz goes smoothly and leaves only pleasant impressions, we recommend familiarizing yourself with local customs in advance.

  1. Dress Code. Strict rules apply in Iran: women must wear a headscarf (hijab) and a tunic covering the hips, while men should avoid wearing shorts.
  2. Currency. International Visa and Mastercard cards do not work here. Be sure to bring cash (Dollars or Euros) to exchange for Rials.
  3. Transport. For getting around the city, it is most convenient and affordable to use the Snapp taxi app (similar to Uber).
  4. Etiquette and "Taarof". Remember the "Taarof" system of politeness: if a taxi driver or shopkeeper refuses money, you must insist on paying several times.
  5. Connectivity. It is best to buy a local SIM card immediately upon arrival, as roaming is expensive and hotel Wi-Fi is not always stable.
  6. Seasonality. The ideal time to visit is April and May, when the city fills with the scent of blossoming orange trees.
  7. Security. Avoid photographing government buildings and military sites to avoid attracting unnecessary attention from the police.

Observing these simple rules will help you show respect for the local culture and enjoy the legendary Persian hospitality.
