General Weather Overview

Olbia, located in Italy, boasts a typical Mediterranean climate. It is characterized by hot, sunny summers and mild, moderately wet winters. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are quite distinct, allowing for four defined seasons, each with its own features.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the hottest and driest, with average maximum temperatures reaching 30-31°C and minimal rainfall. July is practically rain-free. Winter, conversely, is mild, with average daytime temperatures around 13-14°C and nighttime temperatures rarely dropping below 7°C. Although the number of rainy days increases in winter and the shoulder seasons (especially November), total precipitation remains low year-round.

Spring and autumn in Olbia are pleasant transitional periods with comfortable temperatures. May and September-October offer warm weather, ideal for walking and exploring the surroundings, with fewer tourists compared to the peak summer season. Overall, the climate of Olbia is favorable for visiting most of the year, but it is particularly attractive for beach holiday lovers from June to September.

Temperature

The climate of Olbia offers travelers distinct seasons with comfortable temperature transitions. The annual temperature progression demonstrates a classic Mediterranean character. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average daily temperature steadily holds at 26.1°C and 26.0°C respectively, and maximum values often reach 30-31°C. The coolest period falls on January and February. In January, the average temperature is 9.9°C (with nighttime lows around 7.0°C and daytime highs up to 12.8°C), and in February it is 10.4°C (lows 6.8°C, highs 13.9°C).

Summer in Olbia is a time of true Mediterranean warmth, especially at the height of the season. In June, the average temperature is a pleasant 22.7°C, but by July and August, the thermometer regularly rises above 30°C during the day (average highs of 30.9°C in July and 30.6°C in August). Nights bring refreshing coolness: average minimum temperatures in the summer months range from 18.2°C in June to 21.4°C in August. Such a temperature difference between day and night, reaching an average of 9-10°C, makes evenings very comfortable for walks after a hot day.

Winter in Olbia is characterized by mildness and the absence of severe frosts. Average temperatures of the winter months (December, January, February) vary from 9.9°C in January to 11.2°C in December. During the day, the air usually warms up to 12.8°C - 14.1°C, which is quite comfortable for sightseeing in the fresh air. At night, the temperature drops to an average of 6.8°C - 8.3°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in winter are less pronounced than in summer, amounting to approximately 6-7°C, but are still perceptible, so warm clothes for evening outings will be useful.

Precipitation

Olbia is characterized by relatively low rainfall throughout the year, but there is a noticeable difference between seasons. Summer, especially July, stands out as the driest period. In this month, there is zero precipitation on average (0 mm), and a rainy day is a great rarity, occurring statistically only once.

Speaking of wetter periods, the highest, albeit modest, amount of precipitation falls in May and November – averaging 3 mm in each of these months. In terms of frequency of rainy days, November leads, counting about 14 days with precipitation. Spring months, such as March (11 rainy days, 2 mm) and May (10 rainy days, 3 mm), as well as December (10 rainy days, 2 mm), also show a higher probability of rain compared to the summer lull. June and August, although they can bring about 1 mm of precipitation, remain predominantly dry, having an average of 6 and 4 rainy days respectively.

Overall, precipitation in Olbia is likely to be light or moderate rain, given the small total number of millimeters even in the "wettest" months. Thus, July is absolutely the driest month both in terms of precipitation amount and frequency. The "wettest" months by volume of precipitation are May and November, with November also distinguished by the highest number of rainy days. Given the mild winter temperatures, snowfall is not characteristic of Olbia.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Olbia, it is important to consider the features of the Mediterranean climate so that your wardrobe is comfortable and practical. In summer, especially from June to August, when daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C and rainfall is minimal (practically none in July), the basis of your luggage should be light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget swimwear, sunglasses, a hat, and high SPF cream. For evening walks or in case of a cooler June evening, a light sweater or cardigan will come in handy. Comfortable walking shoes are a must-have at any time of the year.

In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October), the weather in Olbia is very pleasant but changeable. In these seasons, it is best to use the layering principle. Take t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters or a fleece jacket, as well as a windbreaker or light jacket, preferably waterproof, especially if your trip falls in March, May, or November, when the number of rainy days increases. Although the total amount of precipitation is small, a small folding umbrella may prove useful. Do not forget that even in the off-season, the sun can be active.

In winter (from December to February), Olbia is mild, with average daytime temperatures hovering around 13-14°C, but nights can be cool (around 7-8°C). You will need warm clothes: sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as a warm jacket, possibly with protection from wind and rain, as there are up to 14 rainy days in November. A scarf and gloves may be useful, especially in windy weather. Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes for long walks around the city and surroundings will become your best companion.
