General Weather Overview

The climate in Ajaccio, located in France, can be described as typically Mediterranean. This means the city enjoys mild, relatively wet winters and hot, dry summers. Overall, the weather here is favourable for tourism for most of the year, with plenty of sunny days.

Two main seasons are most pronounced. Summer, especially in July and August, is characterised by high temperatures reaching an average of 24-25°C and minimal rainfall – July is the driest month. Winter, from December to February, is significantly milder with average temperatures around 9-10°C, and it is during this period that the bulk of annual precipitation falls, albeit in moderate amounts. November and December stand out with the highest number of rainy days.

Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons. Temperatures gradually rise in spring and drop in autumn, creating comfortable conditions for walking and exploring the city. Rainfall during these periods is moderate. In general, Ajaccio offers sunny weather with distinct but not extreme seasonal changes, making it an attractive destination for a holiday.

Temperature

The climate of Ajaccio is characterised by noticeable seasonal temperature variations. The hottest months are traditionally July and August: the average temperature during this period is around 24.4-24.6°C, while daily highs can reach 27.2-27.3°C. The coolest time of the year is January and February, when the average temperature hovers around 9.4-10.0°C, and minimum nightly values drop to 7.6-7.8°C.

Summer in Ajaccio brings pleasant warmth transitioning into hot weather, especially at the height of the season. From June to August, daily average temperatures rise steadily, starting from approximately 21.2°C in June and peaking around 24.6°C in August. During the day, the air warms up to 23.9°C in June and up to 27.3°C in August, creating excellent conditions for beach holidays and active outdoor pastimes. The summer heat is generally tolerated comfortably thanks to refreshing sea breezes.

Winters in Ajaccio are distinguished by their mildness and coolness, which compares favourably to the harsh winters of continental Europe. From December to February, average temperatures do not fall below 9°C; January is considered the coldest month with an average temperature of 9.4°C and a minimum nightly temperature of about 7.6°C. Daily temperature fluctuations are present throughout the year: the difference between daily highs and nightly lows usually ranges from 3.5°C to 5.6°C. In summer, these fluctuations can be slightly more pronounced, bringing pleasant coolness in the evenings after a hot day.

Precipitation

Ajaccio experiences distinct seasonality in rainfall distribution throughout the year. Overall, the city is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with a dry, warm summer and a wetter, mild winter. The greatest amount of precipitation falls in the autumn-winter period, while the summer months are notable for their aridity.

The driest month in Ajaccio is July, when the average rainfall approaches zero (0 mm), and there are only about two rainy days. June and August are also very dry, with minimal precipitation (1 mm) and a small number of rainy days (6 and 4 respectively). This is typical for the summer season in this region, when clear and sunny weather prevails.

The wettest period is considered to be late autumn and early winter. November stands out as the rainiest month with an average rainfall of about 5 mm and the highest number of rainy days – approximately 16. December is also characterised by a significant amount of precipitation (4 mm) and the same number of rainy days as November. January, March, May, and October also bring moderate amounts of rainfall (2-3 mm) and have between 10 and 12 rainy days. Given the low absolute values of rainfall in millimetres even in the wettest months, it can be assumed that the rain is more often moderate or drizzling in nature rather than intense downpours.

Spring months, such as April, and early autumn, such as September, are transitional. In April, about 2 mm of precipitation falls over 10 rainy days, and in September – also 2 mm over 8 rainy days. In general, precipitation in Ajaccio is unevenly distributed, with a clearly defined dry summer season and a wetter period from October to January, peaking in November and December in terms of the number of rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Ajaccio, it is important to consider its Mediterranean climate, which determines your wardrobe choices. In summer, from June to August, it is hot and sunny here, with the average air temperature ranging from 21°C to 25°C, and maximum values reaching 27°C. There is almost no rainfall during this period. Your suitcase should definitely include light breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, swimwear, high SPF sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and quality sunglasses. Do not forget comfortable shoes for long walks around the city and its picturesque surroundings. Even on warm summer evenings, a light cardigan or wrap may come in handy.

In spring and autumn, the weather in Ajaccio remains very comfortable. Average temperatures in April-May are 13-16°C, and in September-October – 18-21°C. Daily highs can reach from 15°C in April to 23°C in September. In these transitional seasons, the layering principle works best: t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, a light sweater or fleece, as well as a windbreaker or mid-season jacket. Although the total amount of precipitation is small, the number of rainy days can be noticeable (from 8 to 11 days per month), so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be a useful addition to your luggage, especially in May and October.

Winter months in Ajaccio (December-March) are characterised by cooler weather with an average temperature of around 9-11°C. November, being a transitional month, is warmer (average temperature around 13.5°C) but is already distinguished by a large number of rainy days (up to 16 per month, just like in December). At this time, you will need warm clothes: sweaters, jumpers, trousers made of thick fabric, a warm jacket, as well as a scarf, hat, and gloves, especially for evening walks. Considering that November and December stand out with the highest number of rainy days, waterproof outerwear and a reliable umbrella will be particularly relevant to ensure your journey remains comfortable despite possible rainfall.
