Kokura Castle belongs to the classic type of Japanese flatland castles (hirajiro), strategically located in a low-lying area in the center of the Kokura district. Although the original structures have not survived to the present day, the modern castle building is an impressive reconstruction made of reinforced concrete in 1959. The full restoration of the castle was completed in 1990, returning it to its former glory and allowing visitors to imagine how it looked during its heyday.
The territory of Kokura Castle is not just a historical site but also a picturesque place for a stroll. The castle is surrounded by a traditional moat, with trees planted along it creating a peaceful atmosphere. The castle grounds themselves are adorned with various uniquely shaped pine trees, which are particularly fragrant in the summer heat. The castle is located in a cozy and open park bordering the Murasakigawa River, which translates to "Purple River," adding even more charm to the location.
