Matsuyama Castle is one of the primary historical attractions of Matsuyama and a true gem of Japan's feudal architecture. This castle is rightfully counted among the country's twelve original castles that have survived in their authentic form, escaping destruction during turbulent periods of history.

The castle rises majestically atop Mount Katsuyama, 132 meters above sea level. This location not only served defensive purposes but also turned the castle into a magnificent observation deck. From here, breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape and the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea unfold.
The central structure of the complex is the main tower, or tenshu. Its current three-story appearance was reconstructed between 1820 and 1854, after the original five-story tower was destroyed by lightning in 1784. Matsuyama Castle is a rare example of a fortress that survived the Meiji Restoration, and despite partial damage during World War II, its historical appearance has been carefully restored.
