Amman welcomes its guests with a climate that can be described as Mediterranean with arid traits. This means that the seasons are clearly defined: you can expect a hot and very dry summer, as well as a mild and relatively wetter winter. The total amount of precipitation is low, and it falls predominantly during the cold season.

The summer period, which lasts roughly from May to October, is distinguished by high temperatures, often exceeding 30-34°C during the day, and an almost total absence of rain. This is the ideal time for those who love sunny weather. Winter, from December to March, brings coolness: average temperatures hover around 10-14°C, and it is during these months that the few rainy days occur. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures, perfectly suited for exploring Amman and its surroundings.

In Amman, there is a significant annual temperature variation, typical of its climatic features. The hottest months are usually July and August. During this period, the average air temperature holds at around 28°C, with daytime highs often rising to 34-35°C. The coolest month is considered to be January: the average temperature at this time is approximately 10.3°C, night-time lows can drop to 6.0°C, and daytime highs are usually in the region of 14.5°C.

The summer season in Amman, which covers the months from June to September, is characterised by dry heat. Daytime temperatures at this time are consistently high, often exceeding 30°C and reaching a peak of 32-35°C. Nights bring some relief, as the temperature drops to a comfortable 19-21°C. Winter, continuing from December to February, is mild and cool. Average daytime temperatures in the winter months range from 14°C to 17°C, while night-time temperatures can drop to 6-8°C. A characteristic feature of Amman's climate is the noticeable daily temperature fluctuations, especially in the summer months, when the difference between maximum daytime and minimum night-time readings can exceed 10-13°C, providing cooler and more pleasant evenings after a hot day.

In Amman, there is a clearly defined seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The city is characterised by a long and very dry summer period, followed by a cooler and relatively wetter winter season. However, it is important to note that the total amount of precipitation in Amman is low, even in the "wettest" months.

The driest period in Amman falls during the summer months. From May to October, precipitation is practically non-existent. In particular, June, July, August and September are absolutely dry months when not a single millimetre of rain falls, and the number of rainy days is zero. May and October are also very dry, with minimal rainfall and just a couple of rainy days in May and one in October.

The bulk of annual precipitation falls during the winter months, from December to March. The "wettest" months, if one can use that term with such low figures, are January and February, when 2 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation reaches 9 and 8 respectively. In March and April, rainfall decreases to 1 mm, with 7 and 4 rainy days. In December, about 1 mm of precipitation also falls, and there are approximately 5 days with rain. Given the small amount, the nature of the precipitation is likely to be light rain or drizzle rather than heavy downpours. Snow, judging by the temperature data, is not a typical phenomenon.

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Amman, consider its predominantly hot and dry climate, especially if your journey falls between May and October. In summer, daytime temperatures often rise above 30-34°C, and rainfall is virtually non-existent. Therefore, the basis of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring sunscreen with high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat for protection against the intense sun. Since evenings can be noticeably cooler even in summer due to daily temperature drops (the difference can reach 10-13°C), a light sweater, cardigan, or shawl will be very useful. Comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as you will surely want to explore the numerous attractions of Amman on foot.

The winter months in Amman, from December to March, bring cooler weather with average temperatures around 10-14°C and a small amount of rainfall (averaging 1-2 mm per month, but up to 9 "wet" days in January). At this time of year, you will need warmer clothes: sweaters, a fleece jacket, a mid-season jacket (possibly windproof), and long trousers. The principle of layering is your best ally, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, from a cool morning to a warmer afternoon. Although heavy rains are rare here, a small folding umbrella or a light waterproof jacket may come in handy. Closed, comfortable shoes will also be relevant. Regardless of the season, visiting certain religious sites may require more modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, so it is worth providing for appropriate options.
