History & Facts

The history of Baum Grove, one of the iconic green spaces in Almaty, dates back to the late 19th century. Officially, the grove was established in 1894 by the prominent forestry scientist and forest inspector of the Semirechye region, Eduard Ottonovich Baum. Initially, a significant area of 228 hectares was allocated for it. Interestingly, even before this, since 1868, the so-called Alferov or Verny Grove already existed here by order of local authorities. The trees grown there were actively used both for landscaping the then-city of Verny (the historical name of Almaty) and for construction needs.

Eduard Baum, who arrived in Verny in 1875, played a key role not only in the foundation of the grove but also in shaping the entire green appearance of the city. Working as the regional forester, he enthusiastically engaged in selection work and the organization of green urban planning. It was Baum who selected unique planting materials in Russia and brought them to Semirechye. Thanks to his tireless efforts, 44 species of deciduous and 17 species of coniferous trees, as well as 52 species of shrubs, were introduced to the region. Furthermore, he enriched local orchards by bringing seedlings of 74 varieties of apple trees, 49 varieties of pears, and other fruit crops, many of which became a hallmark of the region.

In modern history, Baum Grove has also seen important milestones. In 2006, thanks to its status as a specially protected natural area, illegal construction that threatened this unique green massif was halted. This event highlighted the importance of the grove for the city's ecosystem and its residents. Later, in 2018, a large-scale reconstruction of the territory began: convenient wooden signs were installed, and a thorough cleanup of debris was carried out, making walks in the grove even more pleasant and comfortable for visitors.

Time Needed

To get a fairly complete impression of Baum Grove and explore a significant portion of it, including the main alleys and some more secluded corners, a typical visitor usually needs from 2 to 4 hours. This is enough time for a leisurely walk to enjoy the variety of trees, perhaps take a short break, and feel the peaceful atmosphere of this green oasis in Almaty.

If you plan a more detailed exploration of Baum Grove—for instance, if you want to walk most of its numerous paths, spend time watching the local fauna, have a picnic, or get active on the sports grounds—then you should set aside half a day or even more. For a quick introductory walk or a morning jog, 1–1.5 hours may suffice, but to truly appreciate the scale and natural beauty of the grove, a longer visit is recommended.

Baum Grove in Almaty, being an extensive natural park area, is generally open for visits year-round. Entrance to the main territory for walking is usually free, and there are no strict time restrictions for visiting, especially during daylight hours.
