How to get to Turkistan

Turkistan is the spiritual pearl of the south, located in the heart of Kazakhstan. This ancient city, which attracts pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike, has today transformed into a modern tourist centre with developed infrastructure. You can reach it in various ways: fly into the new airport, arrive by train, or take a scenic car route through the picturesque steppes.

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the city is to take a direct flight to Hazrat Sultan International Airport (HSA). This new aviation hub is located close to the centre and accepts flights from major domestic and international cities, ensuring convenient logistics for travellers.

Alternatively, you can consider flying to neighbouring Shymkent (152 km) or Tashkent (236 km). These airports possess extensive route networks, and many tourists choose them as transit points for their onward journey to Turkistan.

Rail travel is a reliable and popular way to get to Turkistan. The city has a railway station located on the historic Orenburg — Tashkent line, where direct trains regularly arrive from Almaty, Astana, and other regions.

Travelling by train allows you to cover long distances in comfort while observing the changing landscapes outside the window. This is particularly convenient for those travelling from the neighbouring city of Shymkent or from Taraz, from where regular services also operate.

Bus services connect the region with many settlements, making the trip accessible and budget-friendly. Regular routes run from nearby major transport hubs, such as Shymkent and Taraz, delivering passengers directly to the city's bus stations.

A trip by bus or minibus is an excellent option for those who wish to save money and immerse themselves in the local atmosphere. Tourists often arrive by bus from the border as well, if their route passes through Tashkent.

Travelling by car offers freedom of movement and the opportunity to enjoy views of the southern steppes. The most popular and shortest route leads from the city of Shymkent: the distance of 164 km can be comfortably covered in just over 2 hours.

It is also convenient to drive from the city of Taraz (about 326 km, 4 hours on the road) or from the Uzbekistan side via Tashkent (approximately 307 km and 4.5 hours). Intercity taxis are very popular here, and finding a car is effortless.

3. Finances. The official currency is the Tenge. Supermarkets and hotels accept cards, but you will need cash for bazaars and small shops.
4. Health. The southern sun is very active. Be sure to use sunscreen, wear a head covering, and drink only bottled water.
5. Language. The main language of communication is Kazakh, and Russian is also widely used. English is understood in tourist centres, but not everywhere in the city.
6. Etiquette. This is a place of pilgrimage, so please behave with restraint and respect, especially within the grounds of religious complexes.
7. What to Avoid. Do not photograph people praying without their permission, and avoid speaking loudly inside shrines.
