It’s not just a stadium, but part of the massive Setia SPICE ecosystem, sprawling over 10 hectares. The complex includes a modern convention center, a hotel, and an aquatic center. One of its main features is its eco-friendliness: the arena holds the prestigious GBI (Green Building Index) certificate, confirming the use of advanced technologies in energy saving and environmental care.

Today, the region's most iconic events take place here—from international sports tournaments to grand musical shows and business forums. Its modern design, well-thought-out infrastructure, and status as George Town's premier indoor center make it a must-visit for those who want to see the progressive side of modern Malaysia.

What to Do

Life is in full swing within these walls all year round. The main focus here is on spectacular events: guests can catch gymnastics championships, dynamic badminton matches, or squash tournaments. If sports are less your thing, be sure to check the concert schedule—the arena regularly hosts global stars and large-scale music festivals, providing excellent sound and comfort thanks to its modern air conditioning system.

An interesting feature is the ease of movement between facilities: an indoor walkway connects the arena with the SPICE Convention Centre, which frequently hosts interactive exhibitions and fairs. Visitors can do more than just observe; they can be active too. Right nearby is the SPICE Aquatic Centre, where tourists have access to an Olympic-standard swimming pool, diving platforms, and a well-equipped gym.

Even if there are no major shows on the day of your visit, a walk around the complex allows you to appreciate the scale of engineering and enjoy the futuristic atmosphere of this "city within a city." It’s a great spot for those who appreciate modern architecture and want to see how world-class events are organized in Southeast Asia.

Getting There

The complex is conveniently located in the Bayan Lepas district, in the suburban part of Penang Island. If you are traveling from the center, which is historic George Town, a taxi or private car ride will take approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses run regularly toward Bayan Lepas. The exact address for your GPS is: 108, Jalan Tun Dr Awang, Bayan Baru. For travelers with their own vehicles, ample parking is provided on-site, making a visit to the arena as comfortable as possible.

History & Facts

The history of this massive structure began in 1997. Originally, the facility was known as the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA). Its construction cost the Penang Island Municipal Council 102.5 million Malaysian ringgits. The arena was built specifically to host the 2000 Sukma Games and the 2001 Southeast Asian Games, at which time it became the most important sports outpost in the region.

The building's journey was not without challenges: after its grand opening in the early 2000s, the complex faced structural flaws and financial difficulties with its management companies. By 2011, the facility had noticeably deteriorated, leading the state government to decide on a global reconstruction. The project was undertaken by the well-known developer S P Setia, which received a 30-year concession to manage the arena.

Between 2011 and 2016, a colossal modernization took place. Builders completely renovated the facade and roof and installed a modern air conditioning system. Following the update, the complex received its current name, SPICE Arena, and became part of the multi-functional Setia SPICE center. Notably, in the recent past, during the pandemic, this spacious building served as a key mass vaccination center for the state of Penang.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to SPICE Arena, it's best to consider the purpose of your trip. If you've come just to see the architecture of the complex or for a short tour, 1–2 hours will be quite enough. However, most tourists visit this place for specific events.

If you are attending a concert, conference, or sporting match, we recommend setting aside at least 3–4 hours. If you also want to try the services of the neighboring aquatic center or stroll through the entire Setia SPICE complex, your stay could extend to half a day. This will allow you to enjoy the modern service and atmosphere of the northern part of the country's main sports hub without rushing.

Working Hours

The operating hours of SPICE Arena depend directly on the calendar of scheduled events. On concert or match days, doors open several hours before the event starts and close late in the evening.

To ensure your visit goes smoothly, we strongly recommend checking the schedule in advance on the official Setia SPICE complex website. This will help you find the exact start times for events and the access hours for public areas of the complex on specific dates.

Nearby

The area around the arena offers many leisure options, especially if you are traveling with family or enjoy active recreation. Exploring the nearby parks and entertainment centers will help make your day in this part of the island even more fulfilling and interesting.
