What to Do

The main reason people come to Gleneagles Bar is for leisurely contemplation. The best spot is on the open balcony with a chilled drink, watching the busy traffic in Mgarr Harbour. It is an ideal platform for people-watching and admiring the ships coming into port against the backdrop of the sunset.

Inside the venue, you will find a classic "old school" pub atmosphere. Be sure to exchange a few words with the owners, Toni and Sammy. They are living keepers of Gozo's history and are always happy to see guests. On weekends, the quiet harbour turns into a hub of fun: karaoke nights and dancing are often organized here, where locals and travelers relax together until late at night.

For lovers of tradition, the opportunity to play cards remains, just as it was done decades ago. Gleneagles is a place for relaxation and a lack of fuss, where every piece of decor—from old fishing gear to vintage photos—invites you to immerse yourself in a cozy community atmosphere where everyone feels at home.

Getting There

Finding Gleneagles Bar is easy, as it is located just a few minutes' walk from the main ferry terminal at Mgarr Harbour. If you are arriving from the main island by ferry from Cirkewwa, just head towards the waterfront—a pleasant walk will take no more than 5–10 minutes. For those traveling around Gozo by public transport, the nearest bus stop is called Mgarr.

If you are coming from neighboring settlements like Xewkija or Għajnsielem, you can take a taxi or rent a scooter. GPS coordinates will help you reach your destination without error. Drivers should note that parking is available directly at the harbour, but spaces fill up quickly during ferry arrival times.

History & Facts

The history of the building that houses the bar today dates back to 1732. It was originally built by the Knights of St. John as port barracks (Il Barrakka). In those days, the massive stone walls served as a reliable shelter for passengers waiting for boats to the archipelago's main island.

The establishment gained its current name—Gleneagles—in 1885, named after the first official "Gozo Ferry Line" steamer. The building's history hasn't always been peaceful: during World War II, it was seriously damaged by a bomb. However, it was later restored using traditional stone, preserving the authentic look that we see today.

A new era began in the 1960s when 14-year-old Toni took over management along with his brother Sammy. In those years, the bar opened at 6 AM and served as a gathering place for dockworkers who drank coffee and played cards competitively. Interestingly, the bar was mentioned in the bestseller "Man on Fire" by writer A.J. Quinnell, who lived on Gozo and considered Gleneagles his "office." Since then, the venue has become a true symbol of the island, hospitably managed by the brothers for over 55 years.

Time Needed

To simply soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the harbour panorama with a drink, 1–2 hours will be quite enough. This is plenty of time to take beautiful photos from the balcony and examine the establishment's unique maritime interior.

However, if your visit coincides with a Friday or Saturday evening, plan to spend 3–4 hours here. The lively energy of karaoke parties and soul-stirring conversations with local regulars usually keep guests for a long time, turning a simple pub visit into a full evening adventure in the heart of island life.

Gleneagles Bar opens its doors daily in the afternoon, usually starting from 15:00. From Monday to Thursday, as well as on Sunday, the establishment is open until midnight. On Friday and Saturday, when the most lively parties take place, the bar stays open until 02:00 AM.
