The majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the spiritual heart of Reggio di Calabria and the largest church in the Calabria region. Located on the picturesque Piazza del Duomo, it is a magnificent example of the Neo-Romanesque style with eclectic elements, harmoniously blending Gothic and Romanesque motifs.
The cathedral's exterior is impressive in its monumentality: the main staircase is adorned with enormous statues of Saint Paul and Saint Stephen of Nicea, who seem to welcome every visitor. Inside, the church is designed in the shape of a Latin cross, and its spacious naves are filled with an atmosphere of peace and solemnity.
A special treasure of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento (Holy Sacrament). It is a true 17th-century Baroque masterpiece, officially recognized as a national monument. When traveling through a country like Italy, it is impossible to pass by this place where history, religion, and fine art are intertwined into a single whole.
