General Weather Overview

Cancun is delighted to offer its guests a classic tropical climate, where warm and sunny weather prevails almost all year round. Temperatures here are remarkably stable, with averages ranging from 24°C in winter to nearly 29°C in the summer months. This makes Cancun an attractive destination for a holiday at any time of the year, ensuring comfortable conditions for beach relaxation and excursions.

Despite the general warmth, two main periods can be distinguished in Cancun's climate. The drier season is usually observed from February to April, when the number of rainy days is minimal (on average 7-8 days per month), and the air is slightly less humid. From May to October-November, the likelihood of rain increases, and the number of days with precipitation can reach 20-24 per month, especially between June and October. It is important to note that even in this "wet" season, the total amount of rainfall (in millimetres) remains relatively low, and rains are most often short-lived tropical showers, after which the sun quickly reappears.

Thus, the weather in Cancun is characterised by pleasant year-round warmth and high humidity, typical of the tropics. Even in months with more frequent rainfall, it is rarely prolonged, allowing tourists to fully enjoy all the delights of this popular Mexican resort. When planning your trip, consider these features to choose the most comfortable time for yourself and prepare appropriate clothing.

Temperature

The temperature pattern in Cancun is characterised by pleasant stability and warmth throughout the year, making it attractive to visit in any season. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates slightly: from approximately 24.1°C in January, considered the coolest month, to peak values of 28.6°C in July and August, which are the hottest months. Even during the "coolest" periods, average minimum temperatures hold comfortably around 22.1°C (in January), while at the height of summer, average maximum temperatures regularly reach and exceed 30°C.

The summer months in Cancun, roughly from May to October, are characterised as consistently hot and humid. The average daily temperature during this period holds steadily above 27°C, reaching its maximum of 28.6°C in July and August. Daytime temperature peaks at this time often reach 30-31°C (for example, the average maximum in July is 30.9°C, and in August 30.8°C). Nights bring only a slight drop in temperature, with minimum values typically remaining in the range of 25.5-26.4°C, ensuring warm tropical evenings.

The winter season in Cancun, covering the months from December to February, is distinguished by very mild and warm weather. The average air temperature during this period fluctuates around 24-25°C. For instance, in January, the average temperature is 24.1°C, with average nightly lows dropping to 22.1°C and daytime highs reaching a pleasant 26.1°C. It is important to note that daily temperature fluctuations in Cancun are small throughout the year; the difference between the average maximum and average minimum temperature is usually about 4-5°C. This means that evenings and nights remain warm even in the winter months, creating comfortable conditions for relaxation.

Precipitation

Cancun experiences a tropical climate with a distinct distribution of precipitation throughout the year, forming periods with higher and lower probabilities of rain. It is important to note that snow is absolutely not typical for this region; all precipitation falls exclusively as rain.

The wettest season in Cancun usually lasts from May to October-November. During this period, both the total amount of rainfall and the frequency of rainy days increase. The peak occurs in the summer and early autumn months. For example, September is one of the wettest months, with an average rainfall of about 6 mm and the highest number of rainy days – approximately 24 days. June and October also show high figures with 6 mm of rainfall and 20-23 rainy days respectively. August is also characterised by a significant amount of precipitation (5 mm) and frequent rains (about 21 days). Rains at this time are most often short-lived tropical showers, which can be intense but are quickly replaced by sunny weather.

The dry season in Cancun generally covers the period from February to April. In these months, the amount of precipitation is minimal. Thus, in February, March, and April, only about 1 mm of rainfall occurs per month. April stands out as the driest month in terms of rain frequency, counting on average only 7 rainy days. February and March also delight with a small number of days with precipitation – about 8 days in each. January and December can be considered transitional: the amount of rainfall (2 mm) is still low, but there are more rainy days (about 14 days), which is slightly wetter than the peak of the dry season, but significantly drier compared to the summer months.

What to Pack

When setting off for Cancun, remember that a warm tropical climate awaits you year-round. The basis of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget several swimsuits, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and, of course, high SPF sunscreen – the sun here is very strong. Comfortable footwear, such as sandals and light trainers, is ideal for walking along the beach and the city, as well as for excursions. In the evening, a light wrap or cardigan may come in handy, especially if you plan to dine by the water where a light breeze might be felt.

The weather in Cancun has its seasonal nuances worth considering when packing your suitcase. From February to April, it is usually the driest period here with minimal rainfall (about 1 mm per month and 7-8 rainy days). At this time, the emphasis is on sun protection. However, from May to October-November, the likelihood of rain increases: rainfall amounts can reach 3-6 mm, and the number of days with precipitation varies from 15 to 24 (especially in June, August, September, and October). Although these are most often short tropical showers that are quickly replaced by sun, a light folding umbrella or a compact raincoat will be very handy. Quick-drying items and perhaps a waterproof bag for technology and documents may also be useful in case of sudden rain during a walk.
