General Weather Overview

The city of Nacala, located on the northern coast of Mozambique, is characterized by a hot tropical climate. The weather here remains warm year-round, making this region an attractive destination for sun and ocean lovers. Even during the "coldest" months, the temperature rarely drops below comfortable levels, creating favorable conditions for travel in any season.

Two distinct periods can be observed throughout the year. The hot and humid season lasts approximately from November to April: during this time, the air warms up to +30°C and above, and the number of cloudy and rainy days reaches its peak, especially at the beginning of the year. High humidity in these months is combined with very warm tropical nights.

From May to October, a drier and more moderate period sets in. Temperatures become milder, staying in the average range of +23...+26°C, and the probability of rainfall decreases significantly. June, July, and August are the coolest months, when rains are extremely rare and the sky delights with constant clarity. This time is considered one of the most comfortable periods for visiting the city for those who find intense heat challenging.

Temperature

In the hottest months, which fall at the beginning and end of the year, daytime temperatures consistently stay around +30…+31°C. The nighttime coolness is practically not felt during this period, as the air cools down only to +24°C, which, combined with high humidity, creates an effect of constant heat.

From June to August, the temperature conditions become milder and more pleasant. During the day, the heat subsides to a comfortable +27…+28°C, and the daily temperature difference becomes more noticeable. After sunset, the temperature may drop to +19…+20°C, bringing a refreshing coolness, so it is advisable to pack light, long-sleeved clothing for the evenings.

Precipitation

Precipitation in the city of Nacala is distributed unevenly throughout the year, clearly marking the wet and dry seasons. The rainiest period falls during the summer months of the Southern Hemisphere, especially from December to March. At this time, precipitation occurs very frequently: for example, in January, up to 27 days with rainfall are recorded, although the intensity is usually low.

The dry season begins in May and lasts until November. During this period, the probability of getting caught in the rain is minimal, and from June to October, rainfall levels often tend towards zero. This is the driest time of the year when, for instance, in September there are only about 2 days with insignificant rainfall.

When planning a trip to Mozambique, it is worth considering that even in the wettest season, rains here are rarely prolonged. Thanks to the warm climate, precipitation is perceived more as a light refreshment than a serious obstacle for walks, especially considering the small total volume even in peak months.

What to Pack

When setting off on a journey to the city of Nacala, you should prepare for a warm tropical climate. The foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen, which will allow the body to breathe in hot weather. Since the season with frequent rainfall and high humidity occurs from November to April, be sure to put a compact raincoat or umbrella in your suitcase, as well as quick-drying items.

In the period from May to October, the region becomes drier and slightly cooler, especially in the evenings when the temperature can drop to +19°C. For evening walks by the ocean, a light windbreaker or a long-sleeved cardigan will come in handy. Regardless of the season, the sun in Mozambique is very active, so a head covering, sunglasses, and high SPF cream are mandatory items on your packing list. Also, do not forget comfortable shoes for walking and insect repellents.
