How to get to Katima Mulilo

Katima Mulilo is the vibrant administrative centre of the Zambezi region, situated on the picturesque banks of the great river in the north-eastern part of Namibia. The fastest way to reach the region is to take a flight to the local Mpacha Airport, which is located just a few kilometres from the city and receives regular flights. Air connectivity is well-developed here, making the journey comfortable and saving time compared to ground transport.

An alternative option would be flying into airports in neighbouring states: Kasane in Botswana or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe are located less than 200 kilometres away. You can also consider arriving in the Zambian city of Livingstone, from where it is easy to reach the border by taxi or transfer.

There is no direct railway connection to the city of Katima Mulilo, as there is no active train station within the settlement itself. Tourists who prefer the romance of train travel will need to travel to the nearest railway hubs in neighbouring countries, for example, via Livingstone or Victoria Falls.

However, it is worth noting that the final leg of the journey, spanning over 150 kilometres, will still need to be covered by car or bus. The railway in this region is more commonly used for freight transport or exclusive luxury safari tours, so planning a route exclusively by train is not recommended.

Travelling by car is one of the most scenic and convenient ways to reach the city, especially if you are driving from Botswana via Kasane, covering just about 128 km in an hour and a half. Routes from the famous waterfalls are also popular: the road from Victoria Falls will take approximately 2.5 hours (about 210 km), passing through picturesque territories.

If you are heading from the Zambian city of Livingstone, the journey will be around 207 km and will require about 4 hours, taking into account the time for border crossing. Renting a car or booking a private transfer allows you to enjoy the views of the African savannah at your own pace, however, always allocate extra time for border control.
