How to get to Katima Mulilo

Getting There: Introduction

Katima Mulilo is the vibrant administrative centre of the Zambezi region, situated on the picturesque banks of the great river in the north-eastern part of Namibia. This city serves as a vital transport hub and a gateway to the national parks of the Caprivi Strip, attracting travellers with its authentic atmosphere and tropical climate. You can reach this destination in various ways: by taking a direct flight, embarking on an exciting road trip through neighbouring countries, or choosing a bus route.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the region is to take a flight to the local Mpacha Airport, which is located just a few kilometres from the city and receives regular flights. Air connectivity is well-developed here, making the journey comfortable and saving time compared to ground transport.

An alternative option would be flying into airports in neighbouring states: Kasane in Botswana or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe are located less than 200 kilometres away. You can also consider arriving in the Zambian city of Livingstone, from where it is easy to reach the border by taxi or transfer.

By Train

There is no direct railway connection to the city of Katima Mulilo, as there is no active train station within the settlement itself. Tourists who prefer the romance of train travel will need to travel to the nearest railway hubs in neighbouring countries, for example, via Livingstone or Victoria Falls.

However, it is worth noting that the final leg of the journey, spanning over 150 kilometres, will still need to be covered by car or bus. The railway in this region is more commonly used for freight transport or exclusive luxury safari tours, so planning a route exclusively by train is not recommended.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By Bus

Although there is no precise schedule for international bus services at the moment, Katima Mulilo is an important regional hub where route taxis and minibuses arrive regularly. Travellers often use combined routes, taking intercity buses to border towns and then transferring to local transport.

Travelling by bus is a budget-friendly and colourful way to see the country from the window, but it requires plenty of time and patience. It is recommended to check seat availability and departure times at bus stations in major cities of Namibia or neighbouring countries in advance before starting your trip.

By Car

Travelling by car is one of the most scenic and convenient ways to reach the city, especially if you are driving from Botswana via Kasane, covering just about 128 km in an hour and a half. Routes from the famous waterfalls are also popular: the road from Victoria Falls will take approximately 2.5 hours (about 210 km), passing through picturesque territories.

If you are heading from the Zambian city of Livingstone, the journey will be around 207 km and will require about 4 hours, taking into account the time for border crossing. Renting a car or booking a private transfer allows you to enjoy the views of the African savannah at your own pace, however, always allocate extra time for border control.

Traveller Tips

Before travelling to Katima Mulilo, it is worth preparing for the specifics of the local climate and lifestyle to ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible. Here are a few recommendations to help you in this region of Namibia.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate here is tropical and humid. Bring light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, but be sure to pack long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against mosquitoes in the evenings; this is also suitable for modest dress preferences.
  2. Transport. It is most convenient to move around the city by taxi, as public transport can be irregular. For trips to the surrounding areas, it is better to rent a 4x4 vehicle.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Namibian Dollar, but South African Rands are also frequently accepted. Cards work in major supermarkets and hotels, but always keep some cash with you for markets and small expenses.
  4. Health and Safety. The Zambezi region is a malaria risk zone. Be sure to consult a doctor regarding prophylaxis and use insect repellents.
  5. Communication. English is an official language and is widely spoken, so there should be no issues with communication. Locals also speak Lozi and other languages.
  6. Local Etiquette. Namibians are very polite and value respect. It is customary to greet people, even strangers, before asking a question or starting a conversation.
  7. What to Avoid. Strictly avoid swimming in the Zambezi River and other open bodies of water due to the presence of crocodiles and hippos, as well as the risk of waterborne diseases.
  8. Extra Tip. Be sure to visit the local arts and crafts market—it is an excellent place to purchase unique handmade souvenirs, such as woven baskets and wooden figurines.

Following these simple rules will make your stay in the city safe and filled with pleasant impressions.
