Most shops in Hoofddorp are open from 9:00/10:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday. On Thursdays, many shops extend their hours until 21:00 (the so-called "koopavond" – shopping evening). Supermarkets are often open longer, frequently until 20:00 or 22:00, and also on Sundays. More and more shops in the center are opening on Sundays as well, usually from 12:00 to 17:00. Bank cards (Maestro, VPay, Visa, Mastercard) are accepted everywhere, but having some cash in euros is useful, especially for market purchases.

For tourists from non-EU countries, the Netherlands operates a Tax Free system. This means you can get a VAT refund on purchases over a certain minimum (usually €50 in one store in one day). When making a purchase, ask the store for a special Tax Free form. Before leaving the EU, these forms must be presented at customs for a stamp, after which the tax refund can be processed.
