How to get to Kimbe

When planning a journey to Kimbe, a vibrant port city and the provincial capital of West New Britain, you are discovering the gateway to some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world. This part of Papua New Guinea is located on an island, so traveling here usually involves a combined itinerary: a flight to the nearest air hub followed by a land transfer. Despite its remote location, reaching Kimbe can be done in comfort by utilizing the developed domestic flight network and road transport.

As there is no airport within the city itself, travelers should aim for the nearest aviation hub in the neighboring town of Hoskins (HKN). It is located just 29 kilometers from Kimbe and regularly receives flights from national airlines, connecting the province with other regions of the country.

Flying to Hoskins is the fastest and most reliable way to reach your destination. The airport is well-connected to the city, so after landing, tourists can easily cover the remaining distance by ground transport while enjoying their first views of the tropical nature.

There is no railway service on the island of New Britain, so it is not possible to reach Kimbe by train. The challenging terrain and historical infrastructure development did not favor the laying of tracks in this region.

Even the nearest settlement to the city, Hoskins, does not have a railway station. Tourists are advised to plan their route using air travel or road transport, which are the primary means of movement here.

Tourists can use taxi services or a pre-booked transfer, which is particularly convenient after a flight. The road allows you to enjoy views of the local nature; however, it is worth noting that the surface quality may vary, so traveling in a 4WD vehicle is often preferable.
