What to Do

In winter, Gubałówka transforms into a popular ski resort. For experienced skiers, there is a main intermediate slope that runs along the funicular and has an elevation drop of 300 meters. Beginners and families with children won't be left out either: eight easy slopes with T-bar lifts are available for them near the upper station. An important detail: all tracks are equipped with snowmaking systems, allowing for skiing even in warm weather with temperatures up to +8°C.

In the summer, Gubałówka offers completely different but equally pleasant experiences. The mountain summit becomes an ideal spot for leisurely relaxation. Here, you can stroll along a street lined with souvenir stalls, rent a sun lounger to soak up the sun and admire the surroundings, or sit in one of the many restaurants serving traditional Polish cuisine.

However, the main treasure of Gubałówka, attracting tourists year-round, remains the incredible panoramic view. The summit offers a breathtaking scene of the majestic Tatras and the town of Zakopane spread out at its foot. This place is a true paradise for photographers and anyone who appreciates the beauty of mountain landscapes, so don't forget to bring your camera to capture these moments.

Getting There

There are two main ways to reach the summit of Gubałówka: by funicular or on foot. The fastest and most popular option is, of course, the funicular. Its lower station is conveniently located almost in the very center of Zakopane. To find it, simply walk to the end of the main pedestrian street, Krupówki, and cross the local market — you will see the station immediately.

The funicular ride takes only about 3.5 minutes, and its high capacity allows it to transport up to 2,000 people per hour. This makes the ascent as comfortable as possible, especially for travelers with children or those who prefer to save their energy for walking at the top. For outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of scenic trails, there is an alternative — climbing Gubałówka on foot. This hike takes approximately 40 minutes and allows you to fully enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature.

History & Facts

The history of Gubałówka is inextricably linked with its famous funicular. It was built at the initiative of the Tourism Support League and ceremoniously launched on December 20, 1938. Notably, it was only the second such facility in all of Poland after the funicular on Góra Parkowa in Krynica-Zdrój. Construction was carried out in record time: work, which began in July of that year, was completed in just 168 days, which was a true engineering achievement for its time.

The funicular's technical equipment has changed over time. The first cars were produced by the famous Swiss company Von Roll Bern. However, today tourists are carried to the summit by modern cars manufactured by Garaventa and Mostostal Czechowice, which were installed during the last major modernization in 2001. The track length is 1,298 meters, and the elevation gain covered by passengers is about 300 meters. The entire complex is managed by Polskie Koleje Linowe S.A.

Along with peaks like Antałówka and Koziniec, Gubałówka is considered one of the central and iconic attractions of Zakopane. Its popularity is due not only to the convenient access to the summit but also to the role it plays in the resort's tourist life year-round. The construction of the funicular was a key moment that transformed the picturesque hill into one of the region's most visited spots, offering magnificent panoramas of the Tatras.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Gubałówka, you should allow anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on your plans and method of ascent. For an express visit, including the funicular ride (which takes only 3.5 minutes each way) and a quick look at the panorama, 1–2 hours will be enough. If you decide to hike up the mountain, allow 40 minutes to an hour for the climb itself, which will increase the total duration of your visit.

To fully enjoy everything Gubałówka has to offer, it is recommended to set aside at least half a day. This will be enough time to leisurely stroll along the summit, visit souvenir shops and restaurants, take photos at the observation deck, and simply relax while admiring the views of the Tatras. If your visit falls during the winter season and you plan to ski or snowboard, it's better to allocate a full day for such active recreation.

Working Hours

The Gubałówka funicular operates year-round, making this attraction accessible in both summer and winter. However, it is important to note that exact operating hours may change depending on the season, weather conditions, or technical maintenance. Generally, the funicular starts running in the morning and finishes in the evening, but during high seasons (summer and winter), hours may be extended. Before visiting, it is strongly recommended to check the current schedule on the official website.

Advance ticket booking is not required but can be very useful, especially during the height of the tourist season, to avoid long ticket office queues. Tickets can be purchased online on the official website, which saves time and allows for a more comfortable visit. This is particularly convenient for those who want to reach the mountain at a specific time without unnecessary waiting.
