General Weather Overview

Angra do Heroísmo welcomes travellers with a mild maritime climate, often referred to as an "eternal spring" climate. Thanks to its location in the Azores, there is no exhausting continental heat or severe frost here. The weather is notably stable: air temperatures change very gradually, creating comfortable conditions for relaxation almost all year round.

The summer season here is warm and the sunniest, yet refreshing. The warmest month is August with an average temperature of about 22.2°C. During this time, rainfall is minimal, especially in July, when only about 4 rainy days are recorded. This is the ideal period for long walks through the historic centre and enjoying nature without the fear of getting wet.

Winter in the city is very mild, and the concept of cold is quite relative here: even in January and February, the average temperature holds at 14-15°C. However, travellers should be prepared for humidity to rise from October to December, and the number of days with precipitation increases to 14 per month. Despite frequent rains in the low season, they are usually short-lived, and the sun quickly returns to the sky.

Temperature

The climate in Angra do Heroísmo is distinguished by surprising mildness and stability throughout the year, without sharp temperature fluctuations. The "coldest" month is usually February, when the average temperature drops to 14.5°C, and night-time readings rarely fall below 13.6°C. Winter here resembles a prolonged spring: there are no frosts, so even in December and January, the thermometer confidently stays at a comfortable mark around 15–16°C.

The summer season brings pleasant warmth, but there is practically no exhausting heat here, which makes long walks through the historic centre very comfortable. The temperature peak occurs in August, when the air warms up to an average of 22.2°C, and maximum values reach 23.1°C. July and September also delight with warmth: the average temperature in these months consistently stays above 20°C, creating ideal conditions for travel.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the minimal difference between day and night temperatures, as well as very smooth transitions between seasons. For example, even in October, average figures remain at 19.5°C, and only by November does the air gradually cool to 17.5°C. Thanks to such an even temperature graph, the weather in Angra do Heroísmo remains predictable and favourable for tourists at any time of the year.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Angra do Heroísmo is distributed unevenly throughout the year, with a clearly defined wet season in the autumn-winter period. The rainiest months are November and December, when rainfall levels reach their peak, and it can rain on average 14 days per month. During this period, as well as in October, an umbrella will become a necessary accessory for the traveller, although prolonged downpours alternate with clear spells.

Summer months, on the contrary, bring the driest and most stable weather. July is considered the most favourable time for a trip if you want to avoid rain: on average, only about 4 rainy days are recorded in this month. June also pleases with a small amount of precipitation, which creates ideal conditions for long walks through the historic centre and getting to know the culture of Portugal.

Spring serves as a transitional period: in April, the number of rainy days is still high (about 13), but by May the weather improves noticeably. Thanks to regular moisture in the soil even in the off-season, the city and its surroundings remain green and blooming. It is worth noting that due to the mild climate, precipitation here falls exclusively as rain, and snow is uncharacteristic for this region.

What to Pack

The weather in Angra do Heroísmo is characterized by mildness and a lack of extreme temperature changes, so you won't need heavy winter down jackets here. However, the climate in the Azores is changeable, and the best strategy when packing your suitcase is the layering principle. Even in the warmest months (July and August), when the air warms up to +22°C, evenings can be cool and windy. Be sure to bring T-shirts, light jumpers, and a fleece jacket to feel comfortable with weather changes throughout the day.

Given the rainfall statistics, a waterproof windbreaker or a light raincoat is a mandatory wardrobe item in any season. In winter and the off-season (from October to April), it rains more often, but brief showers are possible even in summer. Due to the winds characteristic of the region, an umbrella may be less convenient than a quality jacket with a hood. Despite variable cloudiness, the sun here is quite active, so don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses, especially if you plan a trip in the summer months.

For walks around the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo, comfortable footwear is critical. The city is famous for its ancient architecture and cobbled streets, so sneakers or trainers with flat non-slip soles are best suited. It is better to avoid high-heeled shoes: walking on cobblestones in them will be tiring. If you plan to explore natural attractions outside the city, it is worth grabbing a pair of trekking boots.
