The Naryn-Kala Citadel is an ancient Persian fortress majestically overlooking the city of Derbent, Russia. Its name, which translates from Middle Persian as "Solar Fortress," perfectly reflects its impressive appearance. It is not just a historical site but a vital part of the grand Derbent defensive complex, which is rightfully included in the UNESCO World Heritage list and serves as the city's signature landmark.

Situated atop the hill of the Dzhalgan Range closest to the Caspian Sea, Naryn-Kala held a strategically important position. Its powerful walls and towers, which have survived to this day, served as a reliable defense for centuries, controlling the narrow passage between the sea and the mountains known as the "Caspian Gates."
The citadel was the heart of a complex defensive system. Two parallel fortress walls extended from it, reaching directly into the Caspian Sea to the east, closing the coastal passage and protecting the medieval city of Derbent located between them. To the west of Naryn-Kala, the Mountain Wall (Dag-Bary) stretched for 40 kilometers, designed to block possible bypass routes through mountain valleys and passes. Visiting Naryn-Kala is a unique opportunity to touch centuries of history and feel the power of ancient fortifications.
