How to get to Keperveyem

Getting There: Introduction

Nestled amidst the boundless tundra of Chukotka, Keperveyem serves as a key transport hub for the region and the aerial gateway to the city of Bilibino. This small settlement in the Russian Federation attracts travellers with its rugged northern beauty and the authentic atmosphere of life at the edge of the world. Getting here is an adventure in itself, most often beginning with a flight, as ground routes depend heavily on the season and the whims of nature.

By Plane

Unlike many small northern settlements, Keperveyem boasts its own operating airport that handles regular passenger flights. Aircraft most frequently arrive here from Magadan and Anadyr, connecting this remote corner with major regional centres.

The airport serves as the main hub for the neighbouring city of Bilibino, to which passengers travel by ground transport immediately after landing. Given the complex meteorological conditions of the Arctic, flights to Keperveyem may be subject to delays, so travellers are advised to allow extra time in their schedule.

By Train

There is no railway service to the settlement of Keperveyem, as there are no railways in this harsh region of Russia. The construction of tracks here is impossible due to permafrost, vast distances, and extremely difficult terrain.

The nearest major railway stations are thousands of kilometres away on the "mainland". Therefore, tourists should not rely on trains as a means of getting here; aviation remains the primary and practically the only option for long-distance transport.

By Bus

Regular intercity bus services to Keperveyem from other regions of the country are unavailable due to geographical isolation and the lack of a unified road network. Reaching this location by bus from the central part of the country is impossible.

However, local transport exists: specialised shift buses ("vahtovkas") and private minibuses run between the airport and the city of Bilibino. This transfer along a dirt road takes about 40–60 minutes and is the only form of public transport in the area.

By Car

Travelling to Keperveyem by private car is possible only during the winter season via "winter roads" (zimniks)—temporary roads created on compacted snow and river ice. In summer, through-passage by car from the "mainland" is impossible due to the lack of bridges and the swampy nature of the tundra.

This is a route for true expeditions: it requires a specially prepared off-road vehicle, a large reserve of fuel, and a satellite phone for emergency communication. Drivers must be prepared for extremely low temperatures and a complete lack of roadside services for hundreds of kilometres.

Traveller Tips

A trip to Keperveyem is an expedition into one of the harshest regions on the planet, requiring thorough planning and preparation. To ensure your stay is smooth and safe, follow these practical recommendations.

  1. Border Control Regulations. Chukotka is a border zone, so a special permit is mandatory for entry. Arrange this in advance through the appropriate authorities, otherwise, you may not be allowed to leave the airport upon arrival.
  2. Clothing and Gear. The weather here changes instantly, and it can be very cold even in summer. Be sure to bring thermal underwear, a windproof jacket with a hood, and sturdy trekking shoes.
  3. Cash Availability. Bank cards are not accepted everywhere, and ATMs may not work due to connection failures. Always carry a sufficient supply of cash in Rubles to pay for transport and purchases.
  4. Transport to the City. Taxis and private drivers are the main ways to get to Bilibino. Agree on the price in advance, as fares here are significantly higher than the Russian average due to fuel costs.
  5. Connectivity and Internet. Mobile reception can be unstable, and mobile internet is often slow. Check coverage zones with your operator or be prepared for a digital detox.
  6. Food and Groceries. Be prepared that food prices in local shops are 2–3 times higher than in the central part of the Russian Federation. This is due to the complex and expensive northern logistics.

The main rule in the North is patience and flexibility. Weather often forces changes to transport schedules, so always allocate reserve days in case of non-flying weather.
