Memorial Eternal Flame

About

On the high bank of the Vyatka River in the city of Kirov stands the majestic Eternal Flame memorial — one of the most significant historical landmarks carefully preserved by Russia. Opened in 1967, this memorial complex is an architectural focal point of the embankment and a symbol of popular remembrance for local heroes.

The center of the composition features a 12-meter octagonal white stone obelisk. It is flanked by two semi-circular concrete wings that seem to embrace the sacred flame, creating an atmosphere of peace and solemnity. Touching lines by the poet O.M. Lyubovikov are carved into the stone, urging people to remember those who brought peace at the cost of their lives.

The complex, designed by architect Y.I. Karmazin and sculptors F.A. Shpak and V.S. Ryazantsev, is recognized as an important historical monument. Thanks to its location at the intersection of Moskovskaya Street and Grin Embankment, the memorial attracts both those wishing to pay tribute to the past and lovers of beautiful panoramic views.

What to Do

Visiting the memorial offers guests an atmosphere of silence and contemplation. The main activity here is a leisurely stroll through the well-maintained complex grounds, where you can examine the octagonal obelisk in detail and feel the power of the architectural design. Be sure to take a moment to read the lines by the Vyatka poet carved into the white stone—they add special emotional depth to the visit.

From the high cliff where the Eternal Flame is located, you’ll find one of the best views of the Vyatka River. It is an ideal spot for photography: at sunset, the flame contrasts beautifully with the setting sun and the smooth water surface. Many tourists and locals come here for a moment of quiet or to pay their respects by laying flowers.

A visit to the memorial is easily combined with a walk along the Grin Embankment, which is a favorite local promenade. In summer, you can enjoy the fresh river breeze, and in winter, the snow-covered expanses of Kirov. The availability of parking makes this site accessible for road trippers, allowing for a short but meaningful stop during a city tour.

Getting There

The memorial complex is located at 1 Moskovskaya St, in the historical part of the city. It is easy to find—it sits right on the high bank of the Vyatka River at the intersection of Grin Embankment and Moskovskaya Street. For drivers, there is convenient parking in the immediate vicinity of the complex.

If you plan to arrive by public transport, use buses going to stops near the embankment. From the center of Kirov, the memorial can be reached by taxi in just 5–10 minutes or by a pleasant walk through the central streets.

For those arriving at the Kirov railway station, it is most convenient to take a direct bus route or order a taxi to take you down Moskovskaya Street directly to the memorial. During the warmer months, many tourists prefer to approach the Eternal Flame from the Grin Embankment, combining the visit with a walk along the shore.

History & Facts

The history of the memorial complex began on May 9, 1967, with its grand opening. The project was a tribute to the residents of the Kirov region who made an invaluable contribution during World War II. Around 600,000 people from this region went to the front, and the memorial became a symbol of their feat and the eternal gratitude of future generations.

The architectural ensemble was created by a talented team: architect Y.I. Karmazin and sculptors F.A. Shpak and V.S. Ryazantsev. The 12-meter white stone obelisk still looks majestic against the river landscape today. The tradition of maintaining an eternal flame in the USSR began in Leningrad in 1957, and the Kirov memorial became an important link in this nationwide network of memory.

Interestingly, in 2007, the historical appearance of this site was complemented by the wooden Fyodorovskaya Church, which was located nearby. Although the church was later damaged by fire, the site itself continues to be an important spiritual and historical center of the city, uniting different eras into a single cultural landscape on the banks of the Vyatka.

Time Needed

Exploring the memorial complex and the Eternal Flame itself usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. This is enough time to slowly examine the architectural details of the obelisk, read the commemorative inscriptions, and take some panoramic photos of the Vyatka River.

If you wish to combine your visit with a full walk, we recommend setting aside 1.5–2 hours. This will allow you to continue along the picturesque Grin Embankment, enjoy the atmosphere of the old city, and perhaps visit the nearby squares.

Working Hours

The "Eternal Flame" memorial complex is open to visitors 24/7. The flame of memory never goes out, so you can visit either during daylight hours or late in the evening.

The site is open daily without breaks (Monday – Sunday, 24 hours a day), allowing guests to choose the most convenient time to visit and enjoy the river views at any time of day or night.
