The history of this attraction in Russia is unique, as the cathedral was built in the early 20th century through voluntary donations from local arms factory workers. The project was created by the famous architect Ivan Charushin, who managed to embody the grandeur and harmony of Orthodox architecture in stone.

Today, the cathedral is not only the main cathedral of the diocese but also an important cultural site. Its snow-white facades, decorated with mosaics and tiles, make it a must-visit for any tourist wishing to feel the spirit of old Izhevsk.

History & Facts

The site where the modern church stands has been considered sacred for more than two and a half centuries. Originally, a factory cemetery and a small wooden chapel were located here, which was later rebuilt into a church that was destroyed by fire. In the mid-19th century, a stone chapel in the Byzantine style was erected on this spot, becoming the prototype for the future grand structure.

The current St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral was founded in 1897 and built over ten years using donations from Izhevsk factory workers. Unfortunately, in the 1930s, the cathedral suffered a sad fate: it was almost completely destroyed, and the remaining building was used for some time for local production and laboratory needs.

The revival of the shrine began only in 2004. The church was recreated with striking accuracy according to the original drawings by architect Ivan Charushin. In 2007, the cathedral was solemnly consecrated, and ten years later, it received the honorary status of a cathedral, becoming the main spiritual symbol of the region.

Time Needed

For a thoughtful tour of the cathedral and its surrounding grounds, travelers are recommended to set aside 1 to 2 hours. This is quite sufficient to slowly explore the exterior decoration of the building, admire the interior frescoes, and light a candle.

If you plan to attend a festive service or book a detailed historical tour of the church, you should allow a bit more time for your visit. The surrounding area also invites short walks and beautiful photo sessions against the backdrop of the majestic five-domed towers.

Working Hours

The doors of St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral are usually open to parishioners and tourists daily from early morning until evening. However, the exact schedule may vary depending on the timetable of church services, liturgies, and major religious holidays.

To ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible, it is recommended to check in advance for the current opening hours on the cathedral's official website or by calling the contact number, especially if you plan to visit during church festivities.
