Fontan

About

Located in the very heart of Izhevsk is one of the most popular spots for family walks and romantic dates—a modern light and music fountain. It is a high-tech "dry-deck" structure where water jets shoot directly from the ground, and the absence of an open basin allows visitors to walk right between the water streams.

Situated in the Oktyabrsky District of Russia, this fountain impresses with its scale: a 28 by 16 meter platform hides a complex engineering system with 55 motors and an underground tank holding 220 cubic meters. The water undergoes thorough UV purification, while smart automation and an anemometer adjust the height of the jets based on wind speed to ensure a comfortable experience for visitors.

The main feature of the Izhevsk Fountain is its ability to transform. During the day, it operates in calm modes, providing a pleasant coolness, while in the evening, it turns into a stage for a grand performance where the water "dances" to music under bright illumination. It is not just a hydraulic structure, but the heart of the renovated Central Square and an essential part of the city's architectural ensemble.

What to Do

A visit to the fountain offers guests different leisure scenarios depending on the time of day. During the day, it is an ideal place to cool off: thanks to its "dry" design, children and adults can safely run between the jets. For the little ones, there is a children's mode with reduced water pressure, making water play fun and safe.

As dusk falls, the main event begins—the light and music show. The water streams come alive to the sounds of more than 40 compositions, including classics, modern hits, and melodies dedicated to the city itself. The jets, illuminated by a rich palette of colors, soar and fall in sync, creating a mesmerizing visual display.

Photography enthusiasts will find it particularly interesting here: the evening illumination combined with the dynamics of the water allows for spectacular shots. Additionally, the fountain is a hub for city events—themed festivals are often held here, and the surrounding square with its comfortable benches invites long contemplation of the "dancing" water in pleasant company.

Getting There

Finding this aquatic gem is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the city on Central Square. It is conveniently accessible on foot from most key downtown landmarks, including the Izhevsk Pond embankment and the Arsenal building. If you are using public transport, choose bus or trolleybus routes heading to the “Tsentralnaya Ploshchad” or “Arsenal” stops—from there, it is just a couple of minutes' walk to the fountain.

For travelers arriving at the railway station, a taxi ride will take about 15–20 minutes; you can also use direct bus routes (e.g., No. 4 or No. 9). From Izhevsk Airport, the drive takes approximately 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic.

If you arrive by private car, there are parking zones around the square and the esplanade. It is very pleasant to combine a visit to the fountain with a walk across the pedestrian bridge over Karl Marx Street, which connects the central part of the city with the picturesque embankment.

History & Facts

The history of fountains at this site dates back to the 1960s, when a complex of four water features was installed during the construction of the esplanade. Interestingly, in the Soviet era, they served more than just an aesthetic purpose: the water was used in the compressor cooling system for large refrigeration units located nearby.

A new chapter in the life of the square began in 2019, when the current dry light and music fountain was built as part of a large-scale reconstruction. Its opening took place on September 19 and became the main gift to the citizens for Gunsmith's Day. The project was implemented by Moscow engineers, who introduced advanced water flow control technologies hidden in an underground technical room at a depth of 10 meters.

In 2021, the ensemble was complemented by another circular pedestrian fountain slightly further down the slope of the square. Today, this high-tech complex is considered one of the most modern in the region, harmoniously continuing the architectural tradition established by urban planners in the first half of the 20th century.

Time Needed

To simply see the fountain and take a few photos during the day, you will need about 20–30 minutes. During this time, it operates in dynamic or children's modes, which especially delights young visitors.

However, to fully enjoy the main highlight—the light and music show—it is worth coming here in the evening and allowing at least one hour. This will let you see several cycles of “dancing” water set to different melodies. If you also plan to walk across the entire Central Square and go down to the embankment, it is better to set aside 1.5–2 hours for such a route.

Working Hours

The water complex delights visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. It is important to note that preventive maintenance is carried out on Mondays, so the fountain may be turned off on that day. The evening light and music show with full illumination usually takes place between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Keep in mind that the fountain only operates during the warm season. The season typically opens in mid-May and lasts until autumn, after which the system is winterized. In case of strong winds or heavy rain, the automation may adjust the height of the jets or temporarily suspend operation. It is recommended to check the official city portal for updates before your visit.
