At its core, the Ipatiev Monastery is a characteristic example of 16th-century fortress architecture of Ancient Rus. Originally, it served as a powerful fortress defending the approaches to Kostroma from the old Yaroslavl road. The monastery grounds are historically divided into two parts: the Old Town, surrounded by ancient walls, and the New Town, which appeared later. Each of these parts preserves its unique buildings and relics that tell the story of the cloister's centuries-old history.
The monastery's architectural ensemble is impressive in its grandeur and harmony. The central place is occupied by the majestic Trinity Cathedral—the main temple of the complex, famous for its unique frescoes. Nearby rises an elegant belfry. The famous Romanov Boyar Chambers, where the young Mikhail Romanov learned of his election to the throne, deserve special attention. A massive stone wall with towers, which once reached up to seven meters in height, emphasizes the monastery's defensive significance. This wall was designed to be impregnable from the outside while providing the defenders with advantages for defense from the inside.
