Rezidentsiya Snegurochki

About

In the heart of the ancient Russian city of Kostroma lies an amazing place where fairy tales come to life — Snegurochka's Residence (The Snow Maiden's Residence). It is not just a museum, but a real cultural and entertainment center dedicated to the beloved winter heroine, whose image was recreated in these parts by the outstanding playwright Alexander Ostrovsky.

Located in Russia, Kostroma is officially recognized as the birthplace of Grandfather Frost's granddaughter, and it is here that she welcomes her guests all year round. The residence is a picturesque wooden "terem" located near the majestic Epiphany-Anastasia Monastery, which adds a special historical charm to the place.

This spot has become a magnet for tourists from all over the country. Here, Snegurochka sorts her mail, keeps her fairy-tale secrets, and hosts celebrations, making it a must-visit for families with children and anyone who still believes in miracles.

What to Do

The main event at the residence is meeting the hostess herself and her fairy-tale retinue. The cheerful Bayun the Cat, the wise Domovoy (House Spirit), and the caring Domovikha lead interactive tours, involving every guest in the games. Here you can not only hear legends about the origin of the winter sorceress but also chat with her in person in the "Room of Miracles."

One of the most exciting locations is the Ice Room. Even in the summer heat, a real frost reigns here (around -14 degrees Celsius), and the interior is entirely carved from transparent ice. Visitors can see ice sculptures and sit on a real transparent throne for a spectacular photo.

For lovers of tradition, the residence hosts masterclasses and costume balls. After a busy program, you can stop by the neighboring "Metelitsa" restaurant, which serves traditional Russian cuisine, or purchase unique folk crafts at the souvenir shop located right on the premises.

Getting There

Getting to the fairy-tale home is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the city, near the famous Epiphany-Anastasia Monastery. If you are in the center at Susanin Square, a walk to the destination will take no more than 10 minutes at a leisurely pace.

For those who prefer public transport, any routes heading to the city center stops will work. You can also always use a local taxi; a trip to 11 Simanovskogo Street from most parts of the city will be quick and affordable.

For drivers, the historical center of Kostroma serves as the main landmark. There are parking spaces near the residence, though it is worth considering that traffic in the central part of the city can be busier on weekends and holidays.

History & Facts

The status of Snegurochka's official birthplace was not bestowed upon Kostroma by chance. It was here, at his Shchelykovo estate, that the great playwright Alexander Ostrovsky was inspired by folk legends to write his famous fairy-tale play. The image of the ice girl brought to life by love became an integral part of the local cultural identity.

Interestingly, the modern embodiment of the character is also linked to this region: the famous film "Snegurochka" by Pavel Kadochnikov was filmed in the city's outskirts. The wooden sets built for the movie later served as the basis for a theme park, and the idea of creating a permanent home for Grandfather Frost's granddaughter took real shape in 2008.

The building that Snegurochka's Residence occupies today is a cozy wooden "terem" (palace) built in the traditional Russian style. Snow-white carved window frames and an elegant veranda create the feeling that you have truly stepped into the pages of an old fairy tale. Today, it is the only museum and creative center in the world entirely dedicated to this character.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy Snegurochka's hospitality, it is recommended to set aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. This time is quite sufficient to participate in the main interactive program, see all the exhibits, and have a relaxed photo session.

If you also plan to visit the Ice Room or spend more time in the souvenir shop choosing handmade gifts, it is better to plan for half a day. The residence's compact size ensures that even the youngest visitors won't get tired, while the richness of the program leaves plenty of vivid impressions.

Working Hours

Snegurochka's Residence is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday. Guests can step into the fairy tale from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please note that Monday and Tuesday are days off.

Since programs and theatrical tours run on a schedule, and the number of places for balls and special events is limited, it is highly recommended to check information on the official website or book by phone in advance.
